Having been born into a wealthy family, monks, I have attained a state that is completely equal to the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa (Tibetan: འོད་སྲུང་), equal in power, equal in deeds, and equal in skillful means. He pleased me and did not displease me. Having renounced in his own teachings, having abandoned all defilements, having directly realized the state of an Arhat, even after completely passing into Nirvana, the fourfold assembly performed the work of offering. The Hundred Deeds, Volume Two, The Two Hunchback Stories. The first hunchback story is: The setting is when the Blessed One was residing in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a householder who was rich, had many possessions, enjoyed great wealth, and possessed vast and extensive holdings. He was endowed with the wealth of Vaishravana (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཐོས་ཀྱི་བུ་) and rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. Due to circumstances, he took a wife, and together they played, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves. Later, his wife became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful. They held a grand birth celebration for the child and named him according to the family tradition. They raised and nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee. When he grew up, they taught him writing, arithmetic, storytelling, manual calculation, addition, subtraction, concealment, distribution, cloth examination, gem examination, precious stone examination, incense examination, medicine examination, elephant examination, horse examination, and weapon examination. He became skilled in writing, proficient in reading, intelligent, efficient in his work, upright in mind, and adept in the eight types of divination. Then one day, the boy became ill, and his back became hunched due to wind. As soon as his parents saw this, they became very distressed. They gathered all the doctors and all the necessary equipment and performed rituals, but they could not cure him. Then one day, the householder had the thought: This boy cannot be cured by all the doctors, so now I should pray to those who are worthy of offerings, as they have great magical powers and great strength. Perhaps they can restore my son's back to its former state.

Having thought thus, he invited six teachers, headed by the Completer, and satisfied them with many clean and excellent foods made with his own hands. He prostrated at their feet and said: Do you not know anything about the past, future, and present? Do you not have anything you do not understand? Please heal my son, who has been made hunchbacked by the wind. They also performed many mantras and medicines for him, but they were unable to heal him. Then, a Buddhist layperson, a dear and virtuous friend of that householder, said to him: Friend, what is the use of seeking refuge in these non-protectors? Go for refuge to the Buddha, the Bhagavan, and he will accomplish all your good deeds. He said: What does he know? The layperson said: He is the all-knowing one, the one who knows all aspects. Then, as soon as that householder heard this, he felt joy. Having felt joy, he went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, he prostrated with his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan taught him the Dharma that was appropriate for him, and then remained silent. Then, after the Bhagavan finished speaking, that householder rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, would you please allow me to offer a meal at my house tomorrow, together with the community of monks? Then, the Bhagavan remained silent to that householder, indicating his permission. Then, that householder, knowing that the Bhagavan's silence was permission, praised the Bhagavan's words, rejoiced, prostrated with his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and departed from the Bhagavan's presence. Then, that very night, he prepared many clean and excellent foods, and the next morning he rose early, prepared the seats, filled the water for washing hands, and sent a messenger to urge the Bhagavan: Venerable one, the time for the meal has arrived, so if the Bhagavan thinks it is time, please come.
