He would relate to the people the sufferings of being cut and boiled, and so forth. Having returned, he would relate the sufferings of the hungry ghosts, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and boiling, and the sufferings of animals, such as being eaten by one another, and the sufferings of humans, such as toil, exhaustion, and fatigue, and the sufferings of the gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction. When they heard these things, they would become weary, and having become weary, they would attain a superior state. Then, one day, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana set out to wander in the hell realms, and having disappeared from Kauśāmbī, he went to the Avīci hell. There, he saw a large being whose body covered many yojanas. The hell-wardens, born from his karma, pulled out his tongue from his mouth, stretched it out on a blazing, fiercely blazing, completely blazing iron ground, blazing with a single flame, and then plowed it with blazing, fiercely blazing, completely blazing iron plows, blazing with a single flame. All those plows were blazing, fiercely blazing, completely blazing, blazing with a single flame, and those plowing oxen were also born from karma. All their hooves were like the edges of razors, blazing, fiercely blazing, completely blazing, blazing with a single flame. In whatever direction they stepped, in that direction they would cut, chop, and hellify everything. Therefore, he saw that being experiencing intense, unbearable, and hot feelings of suffering. Having seen this, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought, "What karma did this being commit, that by the ripening of that karma, he has come to experience such suffering?" Then, he entered into meditative absorption up to the peak of existence, but he could not find the root of that being's suffering. Those beings in the hell realms died and were reborn, those hell realms

I only saw a fleeting life. Having seen it, I thought, who else could give a prophecy about this karma except the Blessed One, who possesses unobstructed wisdom and boundless wisdom? So, I disappeared from Avici Hell and went to Shravasti. At that time, the Blessed One was dwelling among hundreds of thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana saw the Blessed One dwelling among hundreds of thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Having seen it, he thought: Now is the time for me to ask the Blessed One for the prophecy of that being. So, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said this to the Blessed One: Venerable one, according to my way, I wander in the hells of beings from time to time, I wander in the realm of pretas, I wander in the realm of animals, I wander in the realm of humans, I wander in the realm of gods. Then I come back and tell people about the sufferings of the hell beings, such as cutting, severing, pounding, and cooking. Then I come back and tell people about the sufferings of the pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and cooking, and the sufferings of the animals, such as eating each other, and the sufferings of the humans, such as toil and exhaustion, and the sufferings of the gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction. Having heard these, they will become disgusted, and having become disgusted, where will they obtain special benefits? Venerable one, I wanted to wander in the hells of beings, and having disappeared from Shravasti, I arrived at the great Avici Hell in the hells of beings. Venerable one, there I saw a huge being whose body covered many yojanas. Because of the karma of the people born from him, they pulled out his tongue from his mouth and on the iron ground that was burning, blazing, and all around

Burning. Above that which had become a single flame, stood iron stakes that burned, blazed, and utterly blazed, dividing the ground with single flames. A thousand furrows appeared on that tongue of his. All those furrows also burned, blazed, and utterly blazed, being entirely a single flame. All those plowing oxen were also entirely born from karma. All their hooves were like the edge of a razor, burning, blazing, and utterly blazing, being entirely a single flame. In whatever direction they took a step, in that very direction they would utterly cut, utterly chop, and utterly make into hell. Therefore, he saw that one experiencing intense, unbearable, and hot feelings of suffering. Venerable one, what karma did that being commit, that by the ripening of that karma, he came to experience such suffering? The Blessed One spoke to the venerable Maudgalyayana's son: Maudgalyayana's son, that being is one who commits sinful deeds. Maudgalyayana's son, in a past time, there appeared in the world a Buddha, a Blessed One, who had gone beyond the grounds of hearers and solitary Buddhas, a fully and perfectly awakened one, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, named 'Undiminished Progress.' At that time, a bhikshu, a master of the three pitakas, endowed with intelligence and the fearlessness of liberation, a preacher of the Dharma, together with a retinue, resided in a certain royal palace. There, he became an object of veneration, of being regarded as a guru, of being regarded as an example, and of being regarded as an object of offerings, and he obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicines, and medical supplies. At that time, there was also a bhikshu arhat, a master of the three pitakas, endowed with intelligence and the fearlessness of liberation, who was also a preacher of the Dharma. He, too, with a retinue of five hundred, traveled through the countryside and went to that very royal palace. Many people saw that he was beautiful in body, beautiful in mind, and beautiful in retinue. As soon as they saw him, they rejoiced in him, and he also obtained robes and food there.
