Listen! Since this ascetic has come, our gains and respect will decrease. We should spread false rumors about him throughout the city, saying that this ascetic is one who indulges in desires, not a celibate. Do not think of respecting him. By slandering him in this way, he will become frightened and terrified, and either go to another place or cause us to die. Without him, our gains and respect will return as before. Having said this, the two of them, along with their servants, went to the city of Rudradamana and spread false rumors about the ascetic in the main roads, alleys, crossroads, and intersections, saying, 'This ascetic is immoral, possesses sinful teachings, and indulges in desires; he is not a celibate. He is deceiving you, so do not think of respecting him too much.' That is what they said. Then, as soon as they heard this, most of the people became displeased with the ascetic, saying with displeasure, 'He is one who indulges in desires, not a celibate.' From then on, they no longer respected him, no longer regarded him as a guru, no longer revered him, no longer made offerings to him, and no longer even went to see him. Then the ascetic thought, 'Previously, so many people respected me, regarded me as a guru, revered me, and made offerings to me. Now, they do not respect me, do not regard me as a guru, do not revere me, and do not make offerings to me. What has happened?' When he looked, he saw that the two ascetics, along with their servants, were spreading false rumors throughout the city of Rudradamana. Having seen this, he thought again, 'Whatever false rumors I am attacked with in this city of Rudradamana, all of them arise from the attachment to gains and respect. Enough! I should abandon everything here and return to the previous monastery.' Thinking this, he led the five hundred Brahmin boys and returned to the previous monastery.

So he left. Then, after that Brahmin had left, the gains and honor of those ascetics were restored as before, and so they became very happy. Monks, what do you think? Those ascetics with their retinue at that time were none other than these two, the monks Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. There, they became arrogant due to gains and honor, and because of the ripening of the karma of speaking untruthful words to that Brahmin, they were boiled in the hells of sentient beings for many years, for hundreds of thousands of years. Then, even after dying and transmigrating, wherever they were born, they spoke untruthful words. Now, having reached their final existence and final place, even until attaining Arhatship, the monk Kokālika, in the midst of many, slandered with untrue, incorrect, deceitful, and false words. The monks asked: Venerable one, what karma did the monk Kokālika commit? Due to the ripening of that karma, he was born in the great hell that splits like a lotus, and after being born there, five hundred ploughshares appeared on his tongue. Similarly, from his left and right chests, dogs, lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and so on, with iron claws, cut and ate his flesh. Similarly, from above, vultures, crows, and hawks, with iron beaks, cut and ate his flesh. Similarly, from the left and right chests, groves of iron silk-cotton trees were formed. If he could not bear the pain there and turned his chest, iron spears, large arrows, single-pointed vajras, and single-pointed spears would fall from above. The Blessed One said: Because he harbored hatred in his mind towards the two, Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. The reason for the 'cutting off' is as follows: The foundation was laid while residing in Śrāvastī, when the venerable Maudgalyāyana, according to the Dharma, regularly traveled to the hells of sentient beings, traveled among the pretas, traveled among the animals, traveled among humans, traveled among the gods, and after returning, described the cutting, chopping, and beating in the hells of sentient beings.
