Then, he spoke in verse: When a single man is born, An axe arises from his mouth. He who speaks words of offense, He cuts himself down. Whoever praises those who should be disparaged, And disparages those who should be praised, He accumulates strife from his mouth, And through strife, he will not experience happiness. Here, when Cholī is defeated by self-conceit, Whatever strife there is, it is small. For one who harbors hatred in their heart towards the Sugata, Whatever strife there is, it is very great. Having committed sins with speech and mind, disparaging the noble ones, He will then, for hundreds of millions of eons, And thirty-five billions of kotis, Experience sentient being hell. Thus he spoke. Monks, furthermore, do you wish to hear the lifespan of sentient beings born in the blister hell? The monks replied: Blessed One, the time when the Blessed One shows the lifespan of sentient beings born in the blister hell is the Blessed One's time, the Sugata's time. Having spoken thus, the Blessed One, after the monks had listened, Monks, if so, listen well and pay close attention, and I will speak. Monks, for example, a sesame storehouse in the land of Kosala, filled with twenty measures of sesame, filled to the brim, and from that, someone, having completed a hundred years every hundred years, separates and discards one sesame seed, Monks, that sesame storehouse in the land of Kosala, with twenty measures of sesame, will, by such means, be exhausted very quickly and come to an end, but I do not say that the lifespan of sentient beings born in the blister hell will be exhausted. How much is the measure of twenty blisters? It is the measure of one blister bursting. How much is the measure of twenty blister bursts? It is the measure of one sothamtam. How much is the measure of twenty sothamtams? It is the measure of one kyihutser. How much is the measure of twenty kyihutsers? It is the measure of one achutser. How much is the measure of twenty achutsers? It is the measure of one udpala-like crack. How much is the measure of twenty udpala-like cracks? It is the measure of one lotus-like crack.

That's the extent. What is the extent of the lotus-cracking hell of twenty? It is the extent of one great lotus-cracking hell. The monk Kokālika, who belonged to Devadatta's group, was born there because he harbored hatred in his heart towards the monks Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. Monks, therefore, even towards a tree stump or a spark, one should be without hatred, let alone towards those who possess consciousness. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Monks, furthermore, one person should not seize upon the faults of another person. Monks, if one person seizes upon the faults of another person, they will decline. Monks, only I or someone like me can seize upon the faults of another person. Monks, therefore, if one person is to seize upon the faults of another person, that person should examine that person with eight causes, namely, from their conduct, their sphere of activity, their friends, their companions, their livelihood, their learning, their bodily actions, and their verbal actions. If examined in this way, then whatever has become a cause of hatred for them will be eliminated. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: even towards a tree stump or a spark, we should not generate hatred, let alone towards those who possess consciousness. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After speaking thus, at that time, the monks Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana thought: We two should examine the monk Kokālika. Thinking thus, they disappeared from the grove of light and went to the great lotus-cracking hell. When the two of them went there and looked, they saw that the monk Kokālika was in that state. Having seen him, they placed their minds close to him with compassion and went to where Kokālika was. Then, Kokālika saw the monks Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana from afar. Having seen them, he became even more hateful towards them, thinking: Even though I am born here, these two who delight in evil and possess the Dharma of evil have not abandoned me. Then, as soon as his mind was disturbed, a plow-shaped iron implement appeared on his tongue. Then, the two of them thought: Alas, this foolish person is beyond help. Thinking thus, they went to the great sentient being hell.

Oh, from the great lotus that split open, they disappeared and went to the garden of light. When the two of them arrived there, in order to arouse disgust in those who practiced the same as Brahma, they recounted the harms there exactly as they were. Then, as soon as they heard this, most of the people developed disgust. Then, the two of them, knowing with their minds that those people had become disgusted, taught the Dharma that was in accordance with it. Therefore, some of those assemblies generated warmth. Some generated forbearance in accordance with the peak and the truth, as well as the supreme of worldly dharmas and the samadhi of seeing. Some directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Some directly realized the fruit of once-returning. Some directly realized the fruit of non-returning. Some, having renounced, directly realized the state of an Arhat. Some generated the seed to become a Chakravartin king. Some will become a Chakravartin of strength, some will become Indra, some will become Brahma, some will attain the Bodhi of a Shravaka, some will attain the Bodhi of a Pratyekabuddha, and some will generate the seed of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi. Most of those assemblies were inclined towards the Buddha, inclined towards the Dharma, and inclined towards the Sangha, and were established in it. Then, the monks said to the Bhagavan: Venerable One, please behold, the monk Kokalika, harboring hatred towards the two monks Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, has fallen into the hell realms. The Bhagavan said: It is not only now, but also in the past, he fell into the hell realms because he harbored hatred towards these two. Listen to how that happened. Monks, in the past, in a city called No-Strife, there was a king named Great Army ruling. In front of that King Great Army, there was a Brahmin advisor who was learned, intelligent, with a gentle mind, and who had gone beyond all the scriptures.
