Great joy arose in them for the departed and the great Shravakas. The two of them, being delighted, spoke to each other, saying: "Whatever suffering we two are experiencing now is because we did not accumulate merit in the past. If we two do not perform any virtuous deeds even now, then we two, even after dying and transmigrating from here, will become only poor people." Then the Brahmin said: "Good woman, with what wealth shall we two give alms and perform meritorious deeds? Do we two have any such wealth?" The wife said: "Husband, do not speak like that. This Shramana Gautama is a field of merit among bipeds. Even by showing him a little respect, one will obtain a very great result. We two should offer food to this Shramana Gautama. If we offer it to him, the stream of our poverty will be cut off." The Brahmin said: "Do as you please. Go and prepare many pure and excellent foods and drinks. Tomorrow, when the Shramana Gautama goes for alms in the vicinity, we two will sit in the field and offer food." The Brahmin woman said: "Husband, I will do as you please." Having said this, the Brahmin woman went to her own house and prepared many pure and excellent foods and drinks. The next day, she got up early and went to the field, facing the grove of Prince Jeta, and waited and sat for the Blessed One to arrive. The Buddha, the Blessed One, is the guide of the one and only path, the master of the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed close mindfulnesses, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence, skilled in the six sense bases, whose field of activity is the seven branches of enlightenment, meditating on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption, endowed with the ten powers, roaring the great roar of the true lion. These are the qualities of the Buddha, three times during the day and three times during the night, six times during the day and night, the Buddha

Looking at the world with wisdom eyes, who is declining, who is flourishing, who is poor, who is miserable, who has harm, who is poor and miserable and has harm, who is inclined to evil paths. Who falls into evil paths, who has fallen into evil paths, who will I rescue from evil paths and place in the heavens, liberation, and fruition. Who is sinking in the mire of misdeeds, I will pull him out of the mire. Who does not have the seven noble riches, I will place him in the position of the sovereign lord of the seven noble riches. Who has not generated roots of virtue, I will cause him to generate them. Who has already generated roots of virtue, I will cause him to fully ripen them. Who has fully ripened roots of virtue, I will pierce him with the sword of wisdom. For whom shall I make the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha a world with fruit? Thus, the vision of wisdom arises. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, the tides may cease, but for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha will not miss the time. Then, the Blessed One thought: The time has come to tame that Brahmin and his wife. After thinking this, in the morning, wearing the monastic skirt and robes, carrying the alms bowl, he set out from Shravasti. The Brahmin and his wife saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, the Blessed One went to them, and having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, would you allow us to offer you the food offered in this field? The Blessed One did not speak to the couple, indicating permission. Then, the Brahmin knew that the Blessed One's silence meant permission, and he prepared a seat for the Blessed One and invited the Blessed One to sit on the prepared seat. Then, the Blessed One sat on the prepared seat, and the Brahmin and his wife knew that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was seated comfortably, and with their own hands, they satisfied the Buddha with many clean and excellent foods, and offered whatever he desired. With their own hands, they offered many clean and excellent foods of various kinds.
