After twenty heretics were destroyed by the Wisdom Vajra, they manifestly attained the fruit of entering the stream. Having seen the truth, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together, bowed in the direction of the Blessed One, saying to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, if I am able to go forth and receive the full ordination in the Dharma and Discipline well-spoken by you, and obtain the status of a Bhikshu, then I also wish to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One.' Then, the Blessed One said to him with the words, 'Come, Bhikshu': 'Come, Bhikshu, practice the pure conduct.' As soon as he had spoken those words, his hair and beard were shaved off, and he appeared as if he had been ordained for seven days. His conduct was as if he had been fully ordained for a hundred years. In his hands, he held a begging bowl and a water pot. Here it is said: By the Thus-Gone One's command to 'Come,' He shaved his head and wore the patched robe on his body. By the Buddha's intention, he was clothed, And in an instant, his senses were completely pacified. Then, the Blessed One prophesied to him. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he abandoned all defilements and manifestly attained the state of an Arhat. He became an Arhat, free from desire for the three realms, possessing a mind that was equal to gold and dung, and as indistinguishable as the sky and the palm of the hand, cooled like sandalwood soaked in water, having shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and having obtained wisdom, clairvoyance, and discriminating awareness. He turned his back on worldly gain, attachment, and reverence, and became an object of worship, remembrance, and reverence by the gods, including their retinues and powers. Then, the Bhikshus said to the Buddha, the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, look, although thousands of people have seen the Blessed One, no one has run up crying and embraced the Blessed One's neck in the manner of a loving mother meeting her son.' The Blessed One said: 'This Brahmin, when I have passed away and have been reborn five hundred times, it is only because of the past imprints that he will say that he is meeting me in the manner of a loving mother meeting her son, and to me'

because he was grabbed by the neck. The monks asked: Venerable, if this Brahmin was the father in the five hundred lives immediately after the Blessed One's passing, why has he not become the father even now? The Blessed One said: Bodhisattvas are attached to giving and definitely attached to renunciation. In all lifetimes, this person has obstructed my giving, so I made the aspiration there: In the future, may this person not become my relative. Furthermore, Śuddhodana also made the aspiration: May I become the father of the Buddha. The monks asked: Venerable, where did Śuddhodana make the aspiration? The Blessed One said: Monks, in the past, in the time ninety-one eons ago, a Fully Enlightened Buddha named Vipashyin appeared in the world. A merchant offered him a meal and made the aspiration: By this root of virtue, wherever I am born, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May this precious person also become my son, and may I please him and not displease him. He made the aspiration there. The monks then asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, what actions did this Brahmin commit that, as a result of those actions, he became poor and his face became extremely ugly in old age? The Blessed One said: Bodhisattvas are attached to giving and definitely attached to renunciation. This person has always obstructed my giving and renunciation. Because he has always obstructed my giving and renunciation, as a result of those actions, this person has become poor and his face has become extremely ugly in old age. They asked: Venerable, what actions did this Brahmin commit that, as a result of those actions, he pleased the Blessed One, renounced in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of an Arhat? The Blessed One said: In the teachings of the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, he renounced.

arose. There, he practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, he made the aspiration: 'May I please the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is the prophesied Brahmin boy by the Tathagata, the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector, and may I not displease him. May I go forth in that very teaching, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of Arhat.' Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that moment, whoever went forth in the teaching of the Tathagata, the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector, was this very Brahmin. He practiced celibacy there for one lifetime, and at the time of death, he made the aspiration: 'May I please the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is the prophesied Brahmin boy by the Tathagata, the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector, and may I not displease him.' 'May I go forth in that very teaching, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of Arhat.' Therefore, monks, I have attained the state of being completely equal to the Tathagata, the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector, equal in power, equal in deeds, and equal in means. This one has pleased me and has not displeased me, and having gone forth in my own teaching, he has abandoned all defilements and realized the state of Arhat. The Farmer: Origin: The Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a poor Brahmin who made his living by farming. That Brahmin's field was not far from the garden of Prince Jeta. That Brahmin was also diligent, and every morning he would take his plow and go to the field. His wife, the Brahmin woman, would also bring the Brahmin's food and drink to the field. The two of them would eat together, and then the Brahmin woman would go home. The Brahmin would continue to work in the field. When he went home in the evening, the Brahmin and the Brahmin woman repeatedly saw the Blessed One and the great Shravakas going back and forth from Shravasti. Having seen them, the two of them to the Blessed
