also gave to relatives. Some, due to the maturation of the karma of being burned by fire in anger, thus saw that they obtained such suffering. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought: "Although I have also truly witnessed this karma myself, in order to generate aversion in many people, I should report it to the Blessed One." Thinking this, he disappeared from the seashore and went to Śrāvastī. At that time, the Blessed One was residing amidst hundreds of thousands of retinue, teaching the Dharma. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought: "Now is the time for me to report to the Blessed One in order to generate aversion in many people." Thinking this, he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Blessed One: "Venerable, according to my way, from time to time, I wander in the hells of sentient beings, I wander in the realm of pretas, I wander in the realm of animals, I wander in the realm of humans, I wander in the realm of gods. Having arrived again, I tell people about the suffering of sentient beings in hells, such as cutting, chopping, beating, and cooking. Having arrived again, I tell people about the suffering of pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and cooking, as well as the suffering of animals caused by eating each other, and the suffering of humans, such as seeking, anger, and exhaustion, and the suffering of gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction, so that they will become averse. Having become averse in this way, they will also attain higher distinctions. Venerable, I set out to wander in the realm of pretas, and having disappeared from Śrāvastī, I arrived at the seashore. Venerable, there I saw a sentient being whose flesh was like a lump of ink, about the size of a toilet filled with excrement, and when it was on the ground, from afar there were creatures with needle-like beaks

In a burning field, those beings were burning extremely, and even if they rose into the sky, their entire bodies would burn to ashes. Therefore, I saw that they were experiencing intense, unbearable suffering, heat, and unpleasant things. Venerable one, what karma did that being commit, such that the ripening of that karma led to such suffering? The Blessed One said: Maudgalyayana's son, that being is a doer of evil deeds, he has done many evil deeds. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, that being in the teaching of the perfectly complete Buddha of Light, became ordained and became a Dharma-speaking monk. There, he alone enjoyed the property of the Sangha, the property of the stupa, the permanent offerings, and the property of the Sangha of the four directions. He accumulated and stored some, and later he became ill and gave those possessions to his relatives. When those monks saw this, they stopped him, and he thought: If these people stop me, I will in no way benefit them or myself. Then he became angry and burned all the possessions with fire. After that, he died from there and was reborn as a preta. There, he alone enjoyed the property of the Sangha, the property of the stupa, the permanent offerings, and the property of the Sangha of the four directions, and the ripening of that karma was: the body was like ink made of flesh, becoming as filthy as a toilet, and was eaten by needle-mouthed creatures. There, he burned the property of the Sangha, the property of the stupa, the permanent offerings, and the property of the Sangha of the four directions with fire, and the ripening of that karma was: even if he rose into the sky above, his body would burn. That being did such a deed, so he experienced such suffering. Then, as soon as they heard this, many ordinary people developed great revulsion. The Blessed One, realizing that their minds had become disgusted, taught the Dharma that was in accordance with this, and therefore, there, some generated warmth, and some...

arose tolerance in accordance with the peak and truth, and absorption in the excellence and vision of worldly dharma. Some realized the fruit of stream-entry, some realized the fruit of once-returning, some realized the fruit of non-returning, and some, having renounced, realized the state of arhatship itself. Some planted the seed to become a wheel-turning king, some will become a wheel-turner of power, some will become Indra, some will become Brahma, some will attain the enlightenment of a Hearer, some will attain the enlightenment of a Solitary Buddha, and some will plant the seed of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Among those assemblies, most were established in being inclined towards the Buddha, inclined towards the Dharma, and inclined towards the Sangha. The story called "Son's Perception" is as follows: The setting was when [the Buddha] was residing in Shravasti. At that time, there was an old and frail Brahmin in Shravasti. Once, the prince went to Jeta Grove, and the Brahmin saw the Blessed One sitting amidst hundreds of thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Having seen this, the Brahmin developed the perception of [the Buddha as] a son. Due to this perception of [the Buddha as] a son, he went to the Blessed One and embraced the Blessed One's neck. Then, the monks, seeing the Brahmin embracing the Blessed One's neck, restrained him. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the monks: "Monks, this Brahmin is embracing my neck out of love for a son, do not restrain him. If this Brahmin is not allowed to embrace my neck, he will vomit warm blood and die." Then, having embraced the Blessed One's neck, the Brahmin sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One, having understood his thoughts, predispositions, faculties, nature, and consciousness, taught him the Dharma that was in accordance with him. Therefore, that Brahmin, while sitting on that very seat,
