Whoever, without lying on a bed, is without any negativity, Whoever, as a monk, has thoroughly uprooted the roots of virtue, That one is the one who has gone beyond to the other shore, not to this shore, Abandoning like an old snake shedding its old skin. Whoever possesses discipline, that is a monk, Whoever possesses emptiness, that is meditation, Whoever constantly practices, that is yoga, Whoever has extinguished suffering, that is bliss. A monk does not speak of joy or displeasure, And relies on pure dwellings in remote places, That one dwells mindfully and well cuts off the subtle increase of desire, Of craving. This is the chapter on monks, the thirty-second. Even if adorned, one practices the Dharma with gentleness, Peaceful and truly practices celibacy in discipline, Does not harm all beings with weapons, That is a Brahmin, a renunciate, that is a monk. Not by practicing nakedness, not by matted hair, not by filth, Not by not eating food, not by lying on the ground, Not by dust and dirt, not by striving to sit squatting, People are not purified, they do not cross over doubts. Whatever renunciates or Brahmins, Who are attached to those things, Without attaining the exhaustion of defilements, Abandoning midway, they completely degenerate. Whatever renunciates or Brahmins, Who are attached to those things, Without attaining the exhaustion of feelings, Abandoning midway, they completely degenerate. Whatever renunciates or Brahmins, Who are attached to those things, And look to the edge of children, Abandoning midway, they completely degenerate. Whatever renunciates or Brahmins, Who are attached to those things, The foolish, the unwise, Abandoning midway, they completely degenerate. Whatever renunciates or Brahmins, Who are attached to those things, Without attaining the supreme state, Abandoning midway, they completely degenerate. Foolish one, what is the use of your matted hair? What is the use of wearing your animal skin? While you are thick with impurities inside, You diligently clean the outside. Foolish one, what is the use of your matted hair? What is the use of wearing your animal skin? While you are full of defilement inside, You diligently clean the outside. Not by lineage does one become a Brahmin, Not by matted hair, not by bones. Whoever possesses the true Dharma, That one is pure, that one is a Brahmin. Not by lineage does one become a Brahmin, Not by matted hair, not by bones. Whoever, all sins great and small, All are able to abandon, Because they have abandoned sins, That one is a Brahmin.
