Collection of Specially Spoken Verses. Collection of Specially Spoken Verses. In Sanskrit: Udānavarga. (Direct translation: Collection of Special Utterances). Volume One. Homage to the All-Knowing One! May there be auspiciousness! I shall thoroughly explain what the Victorious One has specially spoken. Dispel sleep and drowsiness, generate joy in your mind and listen. The All-Knowing Protector, the compassionate Thubpa (Sage), the Bhagavan who holds the last body, spoke thus: Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, ceasing is bliss. When it is blazing so fiercely, what is there to be happy about, what is there to rejoice in? Those who dwell in the darkness, why do they not seek a lamp? Bones resembling the color of a conch shell, what are these abandoned things? Scattered in all directions, seeing this, what is there to be happy about? From the very night when a person first enters the womb, he will go without stopping, and there is no turning back from having gone. In the morning, many beings are seen, but in the afternoon, some will not be seen. In the afternoon, many beings are seen, but in the morning, some will not be seen. Many men and women, and those who are in their prime, will also die, so what confidence is there in being alive, saying that this person is young? Some will die in the womb, likewise some at the place of birth, likewise some while crawling, likewise some while running around. Some are old, some are young, some are people in their prime, gradually going away, like ripe fruits falling. Just as ripe fruits are always feared to fall, so too, people who are born are always feared by death. Just as a potter makes vessels from clay, all of which will eventually break, so too is the life of people. Just as on a stretched loom, the shuttle is inserted back and forth, and the shuttle follows closely behind, so too is the life of people. Just as those who are certainly to be killed, with each step they take, approach the place of execution, so too is the life of people. Just as the current of a violently flowing river cannot be reversed, so too is the life of people.

Life passes, never to return. It is difficult, short, and filled with suffering. It vanishes quickly, like writing on water with a stick. Just as a herdsman with a stick drives cattle to their dwelling, so do disease and old age lead people to the lord of death. Like water from a spring, as days and nights pass, people's lives are exhausted, and their life force diminishes. For the weary, the night is long; for the weary traveler, the distance is long; for those who do not know the true Dharma, samsara is long. The thought, "I have sons, I have wealth," destroys the fool. If there is no "self" within or without, then whose son, and what wealth? Beings, male and female, hundreds and thousands, even those who have accumulated great pleasures, will eventually come under the power of death. The end of all accumulation is exhaustion, the end of rising is falling, the end of meeting is separation, and the end of living is death. Because the end of living is death, all sentient beings will die, and the fruits of virtue and vice will closely follow, truly following karma. Sinful actions lead to hell, virtuous actions lead to happy realms, and others, by cultivating the path, attain stainless Nirvana. Whether Buddha, Pratyekabuddha, or even the Shravakas of the Buddhas, they all abandon this body. What need is there to mention ordinary people? There is no place where one can dwell and not be overcome by death. Not in the sky, not in the middle of the ocean, not even by entering into the mountains. As many beings as have come and will come, all will abandon this body and depart. The wise should realize that all this will perish, abide in the Dharma, and practice pure conduct. Having seen old age, the suffering of disease, and death, which is separation from consciousness, with steadfastness, abandon the home that is like a prison. How many ordinary people can renounce desires? Even the king's chariot, though very splendid, will decay. Likewise, the body will also grow old. This Dharma of the noble ones is noble, the wise realize it and it does not age. Aging
