If I have done, then sorrow arises. If I have been alone, then sorrow arises. If there is its ripening, then sorrow arises. Seeing myself endowed with black deeds, here also sorrow, and elsewhere also sorrow arises. Having done evil deeds, both here and there sorrow arises. That is sorrow, that is extreme sorrow. If I have done merit, then joy arises. If separated and far away, then joy arises. If I have been alone, then joy arises. If there is its ripening, then joy arises. Seeing myself endowed with pure deeds, here joy arises, and elsewhere also joy arises. Having done merit, both here and there joy arises, that is joy, that is extreme joy. If I have done evil, then suffering arises. If separated and far away, then suffering arises. If I have been alone, then suffering arises. If there is its ripening, then suffering arises. Seeing myself endowed with black deeds, here suffering arises, and in the future suffering arises. Having done evil, both here and there suffering arises, that is suffering, that is extreme suffering. If I have done merit, then joy arises. If separated and far away, then joy arises. If I have been alone, then joy arises. If there is its ripening, then joy arises. Seeing myself endowed with white deeds, here joy arises, and in the future joy arises. Having done merit, both here and there joy arises, that is joy, that is extreme joy. Having done evil and not done merit, deviating from the Dharma and obtaining what is not Dharma, those with sinful deeds fear death, like a bad boat breaking in a great river. Having done merit and not done evil, practicing the Dharma of the noble ones of the past, we are never without fear of death, like a stable boat going to the other shore. The twenty-eighth chapter on the collection of sins. As long as the sun has not risen, the firefly appears to shine. When the sun has risen, there is no light and it turns blue. As long as the Thus-Gone One has not appeared, the logicians appear. When the World-Perfect Buddha has appeared, the speculative Hearers do not appear. Holding what is not cherished as cherished, and not thinking of what is cherished as cherished, the object of wrong conceptual thoughts.

Na. Therefore, one will not obtain what is cherished. Not cherishing what should not be cherished, And recognizing what should be cherished as cherished, One who has a well-considered sphere of activity, Therefore, one will obtain what is cherished. Here, those who are manifestly attached to seeing and hearing, New bonds that grow ever anew, Run in samsara, experiencing going and staying, Like moths falling into the fire. Experiencing here, experiencing elsewhere, Or however many doubts and differences there are here, Those are thoroughly abandoned through pure conduct and diligence, And through contemplation. Some who, while still having defilements, Wear the robes of a renunciate, Without taming and tranquility, Are not fit to wear the robes of a renunciate. Some who, having abandoned all defilements, Well abide in discipline, Possessing taming and tranquility, Are fit to wear the robes of a renunciate. People with deceit and stinginess, Merely because they have color and form, Or merely because they can speak, Cannot be considered superior men. Some who cut off those three dharmas, Like cutting off the head of a palm tree, Intelligent, having cleared away faults, Can be called superior men. In this world, those who are not well-tamed, Mostly use the appearance of being tamed as a means, Before observing well, do not trust the impure, Just because you see their color and form a few times. Like brass plated with gold, it is unsuitable, Like iron half covered with gold, With an extremely malicious heart, outwardly appearing noble, They wander in this world with their retinue. Some who snore and fall asleep, Sleeping and tossing about day and night, Like a fat pig swelling in the mud, Again and again enter inferior wombs. If a person is always mindful, And always knows the measure of food, His suffering will be lessened, And digesting slowly, his life will also be lengthened. Some who have not tamed their senses, And do not know the measure of food, Lacking mindfulness and being lazy, Abiding with a view of purity, They are overcome by desires, Like an unstable tree by the wind. Some who have well-tamed their senses, And know the measure of food, Remembering separately and being diligent, Abiding with a view of impurity, They are not overcome by desires, Like a mountain not by the wind.
