, one should not befriend the wicked. How to rely on a friend, how to closely attend and serve, what kind of person should be attended to, one will soon become like that. Therefore, like a container for fruit, knowing how to rely, I do not rely on the non-holy, the wise should rely on the holy, and if one follows the path of that monk, one will attain the cessation of suffering. Even if a child relies on a wise person for a lifetime, he will not understand the Dharma, like a spoon tasting the flavor of soup. Even if a wise person closely attends and serves a wise person for a moment, he will understand all the Dharmas, like a tongue tasting the flavor of soup. Even if a child relies on a wise person for a lifetime, because he has no eyes, he will not understand the Dharmas. Even if a wise person closely attends and serves a wise person for a moment, because he has eyes, he will fully understand all the Dharmas. Even if a child relies on a wise person for a lifetime, he will not understand the Dharmas taught by the Fully Awakened One. Even if a wise person closely attends and serves a wise person for a moment, he will understand the Dharmas taught by the Fully Awakened One. Even one meaningful word can accomplish the work of the wise, but the words of all the Buddhas cannot accomplish the work of a child. A wise person can understand the meaning of a hundred words with one word, but even with a thousand words, a child cannot understand the meaning of one word. It is better to be alone than to befriend a fool, one should not befriend children, befriending children leads beings to hell. Whoever knows who is a child, that is the wise one, whoever thinks he is wise, is called a child. Compared to the praise of a child and the criticism of a wise person, it is better to accept the criticism of a wise person than to accept the praise of a child. Relying on a child is painful, like an enemy in every way, it is better not to hear or see a child, and not to rely on him. Like meeting a relative, relying on a stable person brings happiness, therefore, like the moon traveling in the path of the stars, stable and learned

The excellent guide of the masses, possessing discipline and noble conduct, one should rely on the loving and virtuous best of men. This is the twenty-fifth chapter on friendship. Just as a turtle withdraws its limbs into its own shell, a monk should gather his mind's thoughts within, without dependence and without harming others, and not revile Nirvana. Patience is the best austerity, the Buddha said that patience is the highest Nirvana. A renunciate should not harm or injure others, that is not a practitioner. One should not speak any harsh words, for if spoken, they will be spoken back. Contentious words cause suffering, and one will be punished in return. If I strike first, like beating a drum, I will long experience the suffering of birth and aging in samsara. If I do not strike first, like not beating a drum, then strife will not arise, and Nirvana will be attained. Being without illness is the supreme gain, contentment is the essence of wealth, a faithful friend is the best, and Nirvana is the pinnacle of happiness. Conditioned things are suffering, repulsive, and hunger is the most unbearable of diseases. If one knows these as they are, Nirvana becomes supreme. Few beings go to the happy realms, countless go to the evil realms. If one realizes such faults, one will quickly attain Nirvana. Going to the happy realms has its cause, going to the evil realms has its cause, going to Nirvana has its cause, all of these have their causes. Deer go to the excellent forest, birds fly in the sky, practitioners go through meditation, and Arhats go to Nirvana. If one is lazy here, with a small mind and without wisdom, one will not be able to cut all the bonds, and will not attain Nirvana. You sweep the water from this boat, just as this boat becomes light, similarly, abandon hatred and desire, and then you will attain Nirvana. What has happened in the past will not happen again, what has not happened will happen, what has not happened will not happen, and what is happening now does not exist. Difficult to see, without limit, one does not see there, thoroughly realizing truth and knowledge, seeing without craving and joy, this is excellent.
