Those who have seen the stainless state, even if they live only a few days, it is worthwhile. Those who have not seen the state free from dust, what is the point of living for a hundred years? Those who have seen the state free from dust, even if they live only a few days, it is worthwhile. What is the use of a person relying entirely on fire in the forest for a hundred years? The merit of offering for a moment while meditating on oneself is better than that, better than giving alms for a hundred years.

Even a sixteenth part is hard to match for those who have deep love for me. Whoever makes a thousand offerings and gifts every month, doing so for a hundred years, even a sixteenth part is hard to match for one who treats others with a compassionate heart. Whoever makes a thousand offerings and gifts every month, doing so for a hundred years, even a sixteenth part is hard to match for the well-spoken sacred Dharma. Whatever small offerings and gifts a person desiring merit makes in the world, even a quarter of that is hard to match for someone who bows with an upright heart. The chapter on comparison, the twenty-fourth chapter, is complete. The chapter on special instructions, volume three. The wise should not befriend those who lack faith and are stingy, as well as those who cause discord and gossip, and should not associate with wicked people. The wise should befriend those who have faith and speak sweetly, as well as those who are learned and possess discipline, and should associate with excellent people. One should not associate with bad friends, and should not associate with bad people. One should associate with virtuous spiritual friends, and should associate with noble people. If one associates with such people, one will not fall into sin, but will become better. People should associate with those who are learned, live in many places, have mindfulness, and possess faith and wisdom. Here, if one listens to their good words, one will obtain excellent results over a long period of time. By associating with inferior people, people will decline; by associating with mediocre people, one will remain in the present state; by associating with superior people, one will obtain superior results. Therefore, one should associate with superior people. One should associate with a superior person who is pure in discipline, peaceful, and possesses excellent wisdom, and one will become even more superior than the superior person. If someone here uses rotten fish to tie up a clean object of Kusha grass, the Kusha grass itself will also rot, and it is the same with associating with sinful people. If someone applies fragrance to a leaf, the leaf itself will also emit a fragrance, and it is the same with associating with virtuous people. If evil people are associated with by those who do not do evil, doubts of doing evil will arise, and unpleasant things will also increase. If one associates with someone who should not be associated with, one will become faulty due to their faults. Just as when arrows smeared with poison are put into a quiver, even arrows that are not smeared with poison will be contaminated. Relying on others carries the danger of being contaminated with faults.
