As the night, so is the day. As before, so after. As after, so before. As below, so above. As above, so below. Thus opened, with a mind without pervasiveness, dwelling intensely on the perception of day, one meditates on that light in the mind. Monks, it is like this: for example, in the last month of summer, on a day when the sky is without clouds and free from clouds, at midday the light of the sun is completely pure, completely white, and bright, and not dark. Monks, likewise, a monk should hold the perception of light very well, attend to it well, touch it well, understand it well, and dwelling intensely on the perception of day, meditate on that light in the mind. As the day, so is the night. As the night, so is the day. As before, so after. As after, so before. As below, so above. As above, so below. Thus opened, with a mind without pervasiveness, dwelling intensely on the perception of day, one meditates on that light in the mind. This is cultivating meditative absorption; if cultivated constantly and practiced extensively, the vision of wisdom will be attained. Monks, what is it that cultivating meditative absorption, if cultivated constantly and practiced extensively, will lead to the attainment of wisdom? Monks, here, a monk, whether dwelling in a forest hermitage, or dwelling at the foot of a tree, or dwelling in an empty room, having abandoned pleasure, and having previously abandoned suffering, with the cessation of joy and displeasure, there is neither suffering nor pleasure; with equanimity and mindfulness completely purified, he dwells having fully perfected the fourth dhyana. This is cultivating meditative absorption; if cultivated constantly and practiced extensively, wisdom will be attained. Monks, these are the four cultivations of meditative absorption. Monks, what are the four applications of mindfulness? Monks, here, a monk, diligent, with knowing awareness, endowed with mindfulness, having eliminated the covetousness and displeasure of the world, in the inner body

And dwells contemplating the body, being ardent, clearly knowing, and mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world, with regard to the inner body, the outer body, and the inner and outer body; with regard to the inner feelings, the outer feelings, and the inner and outer feelings; with regard to the inner mind, the outer mind, and the inner and outer mind; with regard to the inner dharmas, the outer dharmas, and the inner and outer dharmas, he dwells contemplating the dharmas. Monks, these are the four mindfulnesses. Monks, what are the four right exertions? Here, monks, a monk, for the sake of abandoning evil, unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, generates desire, strives, exerts effort, firmly grasps the mind, and thoroughly establishes it; for the sake of not generating evil, unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen, he generates mindfulness, strives, exerts effort, firmly grasps the mind, and thoroughly establishes it; for the sake of generating wholesome dharmas that have not arisen, he generates desire, strives, exerts effort, firmly grasps the mind, and thoroughly establishes it; and for the sake of the wholesome dharmas that have arisen, to maintain them, not to forget them, not to let them decline, to increase them, to expand them, and to perfect them, he generates desire, strives, exerts effort, firmly grasps the mind, and thoroughly establishes it. Monks, these are the four right exertions. Monks, what are the four legs of magical power? Here, monks, one's own desire should not be too submerged, nor should it be too grasped. Thus, the leg of magical power, endowed with the concentration of desire and the activity of abandoning, dwelling in solitude, dwelling in detachment, dwelling in cessation, transforming with complete abandonment, meditates; one's own effort should not be too submerged, nor should it be too grasped.

It is also not permissible. If you are too attached, it is also not permissible. Like this, the magical foot that possesses the intention of abandoning the samadhi of the mind, dwells in solitude, dwells in detachment, dwells in cessation, and cultivates transformation through complete abandonment; my observation, if it is too immersed, it is also not permissible, if it is too attached, it is also not permissible. Like this, the magical foot that possesses the intention of abandoning the samadhi of observation, dwells in solitude, dwells in detachment, dwells in cessation, and cultivates transformation through complete abandonment. Monks, these are the four magical feet. Monks, what are the five faculties there? Like this: Faith faculty, diligence faculty, mindfulness faculty, samadhi faculty, and wisdom faculty. What is the faith faculty there? With the faith faculty, one has faith in the four dharmas, what are the four? Having faith in the worldly right view that is practiced in samsara, and relying on the ripening of karma, whether it is virtuous or non-virtuous, whatever karma is done, one will experience the ripening of that karma, and even for the sake of life, one will not manifestly engage in sinful deeds, this is called the faith faculty. What is the diligence faculty there? Those dharmas that are believed by the faith faculty, are truly accomplished by the diligence faculty, this is called the diligence faculty. What is the mindfulness faculty there? Those dharmas that are truly accomplished by the diligence faculty, are not forgotten by the mindfulness faculty, these are called the mindfulness faculty. What is the samadhi faculty there? Those dharmas that are not forgotten by the mindfulness faculty, are made one-pointed by the samadhi faculty, this is called the samadhi faculty. What is the wisdom faculty there? Those dharmas that are made one-pointed by the samadhi faculty, are thoroughly understood by the wisdom faculty, and that dharma has the nature of individual discernment, this is called the wisdom faculty. Monks, these are the faculties.
