The direction is low. If the west is high, the east is low. If the south is high, the north is low. If the north is high, the south is low. If the center is high, the edge is low. If the edge is high, the center becomes low. Thus, everything is connected in sequence. Devadatta did not bow, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Son, you have renounced to abandon pride, so bow!' He replied, 'If I do not bow to his feet, what harm is there to you?' Thus, he did not bow, and there Devadatta first broke the Blessed One's command. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in the Nyagrodha garden in the land of Kapilavastu. Then, many Shakyas residing in Kapilavastu gathered and assembled in the assembly hall, and they were discussing such matters as these: 'Wise ones, from where did the Shakyas originate? What is the beginning? What is the cause? What is the previous lineage of the Shakyas? If someone comes to us and asks this: Wise ones, from where did the Shakyas originate? What is the beginning? What is the cause? What is the previous lineage of the Shakyas?' If they ask in this way, and we do not know from where the Shakyas originated, what the beginning is, what the cause is, and what the previous lineage of the Shakyas is, how shall we answer? Let us go to where the Blessed One is, ask the Blessed One about this matter, and then understand according to what the Blessed One instructs us.' Then, many Shakyas residing in Kapilavastu went to where the Blessed One was, bowed to the Blessed One's two feet with their heads, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Shakyas of Kapilavastu spoke thus: 'Venerable one, here we, many Shakyas of Kapilavastu, have gathered and assembled in the assembly hall, and we were discussing such matters as these: From where did the Shakyas originate? What is the beginning? What is the cause? What is the previous lineage of the Shakyas? If someone comes to us and asks this

Asking about this matter, wise people, from what did the Shakya clan originate? What was the beginning? What is the cause? What was the lineage of the Shakyas before? If they ask in this way, how can we prophesy if we do not know from what the Shakyas originated, what the beginning was, what the cause was, and what the lineage of the Shakyas was before? Let us go to where the Blessed One is, ask the Blessed One about this matter, and we will accept whatever the Blessed One prophesies for us. For this reason, we ask the Blessed One about this matter. Blessed One, from what did the Shakyas originate? What was the beginning? What is the cause? What was the lineage of the Shakyas before? Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: If I start to speak about the Dharma from the lineage of the Shakyas before, then the heretics and other wandering ascetics will say: 'The monk Gautama prophesies whatever he wants, and praises himself with it.' Because this situation exists, who among my Shravakas is able to speak about the Dharma starting from the lineage of the Shakyas before? At that time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was also gathered in that same assembly. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: 'Maudgalyāyana, I am old and weary, so rest for a while. You should be able to speak about the Dharma to the monks starting from the lineage of the Shakyas before.' The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana did not say anything to the Blessed One, indicating his acceptance. Then, the Blessed One, realizing that the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had accepted without speaking, folded his robe and placed it as a pillow, lay down on his right side, placed his feet on top of each other, and with his mind focused solely on the perception of light, mindfulness, and awareness, he fell asleep. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought to himself: How should I equally abide in my mind so that I may know from what the Shakyas originated?

And, what was the beginning, What is the cause, and to see what the lineage of the Shakyas was before, thinking, 'I should enter into such a samadhi,' how did the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana calm his mind? He entered into such a samadhi in order to know the lineage of the Shakyas before. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana knew the lineage of the Shakyas before, from where the Shakyas were born, what was the beginning, what was the cause, and what was the lineage of the Shakyas before. Having known, he arose from that samadhi and sat down on a seat prepared in the midst of the community of monks. Having sat down, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Shakyas of Kapilavastu: 'Friends, when this world is destroyed and the world is ruined, most beings will be born in the realm of the gods of clear light. There they have a mind-made body, perfect in form, with faculties intact and complete, possessing all limbs and minor limbs, abiding in beautiful color, with their own light, traveling in the sky, eating joy and dwelling long and long-lasting with the food of joy. At that time, this great earth will become pure water, becoming a single ocean. When this great earth has become a single ocean of pure water, the wind will form a film on top, making it hard and covering it. For example, when boiled milk cools, a film forms on top, making it hard and covering it, similarly, when this great earth has become a single ocean of pure water, the wind will form a film on top, making it hard and covering it. That essence of earth has perfect color, perfect smell, and perfect taste, and the color is like ghee. The taste is like the taste when honey is squeezed. O Gautamas, when this world is formed and the world is established, some beings, having exhausted their lifespan, exhausted their karma, and exhausted their merit, die and transmigrate from the realm of the gods of clear light to humans like these.'
