said: I have a little heavenly cloth left to weave, and I have been afflicted with illness. The king said: Young man, how do you know? He said: Because I have experienced the touch of heat, I smell the odor of disease. The king was very surprised and said: The wise are not extinct, it is the good fortune of the Shakyas. Then, the Shakya king Bhadra said: Young man, if I renounce, Devadatta will become the king of the Shakyas, and he will harm the Shakyas. It is better that we all gather together and make Devadatta happy. The Shakya king Bhadra summoned him, and then everyone gathered together and said: Devadatta, if we all renounce, what will you do? Devadatta thought: If I say I will not renounce, the Shakya king Bhadra will not renounce, I must find a way to deceive him. Furthermore, on the day when the Blessed One displayed miraculous powers in the Nyagrodha Garden, I had this thought: Just as he controls the great crowd with illusions, I will also control them. So he said: If you all renounce, what will I do? The Shakya king Bhadra thought: This person is lying, I must make him take an oath and let many people know. Then the king wrote these words on a wooden board and announced them in the center of Kapilavastu: Listen, wise people living in Kapilavastu! Bhadra, Namzhu, Imperishable, and Devadatta, etc., five hundred Shakyas will renounce, listen and rejoice. When Devadatta heard this, he felt great pain and displeasure, and thought: If I knew that the Shakya king Bhadra would definitely renounce, I would not have agreed. If I do not renounce, I am lying, and I will not get the throne, will everything end at this time? Should I renounce, or should I renounce?

thinking to rule the kingdom in that way. Then, King Śuddhodana thought: I will look at the final wealth of the Śākyas. So, he cleared the city of bricks and pebbles, sprinkled it with sandalwood water, erected umbrellas and victory banners, hung many silk streamers, placed very fragrant incense burners nearby, and had various flower petals scattered about as if playing. Then, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Śākyas, the king sat on a lion throne at the city gate. Śākya women and handsome youths also sat in windows with latticed openings, windows, and on platforms. Crowds of men from various places who wanted to see the wealth of the Śākyas also gathered on the main roads, in the markets, at the crossroads, and at the junctions of three roads. Brahmins, soothsayers, and diviners were summoned to examine who would please the Śākyas and who would displease them. The Śākyas, adorned with necklaces, bracelets, armlets, and various ornaments, looked at their fathers and mothers, and each mounted their own vehicles and began to go out. King Bhadra of the Śākyas came out first, and the soothsayers saw him and said: For a while, this one will be pleasing. Similarly, when Namaru and the Uninterrupted One and others came out, the soothsayers also made predictions. Then, Devadatta came out, and as he came out, a crow snatched the jewel from the top of his head. The soothsayers saw this and said: If this omen is connected, he will undoubtedly insist on false teachings and ultimately fall into hell. When Kokālika, Khandadrabhya, Katamora, Jita, and Samudradatta came out, the sound of a donkey was heard, and
