Caused by joy, in short, let him abandon his arrogance. There are two reasons why truths cannot be seen: excessive despondency and extreme joy. He has a despondent mind and extreme joy, thinking that I should let him abandon his despondency and extreme joy. Then, the Blessed One told the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son: Maudgalyāyana's son, go and visit King Śuddhodana. The Venerable replied: As you command. Having heard from the Blessed One, the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son went to where King Śuddhodana was. King Śuddhodana saw the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son coming from afar. Having seen him, he said these words to the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son: Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son, please come here. Great Maudgalyāyana's son, it is good that you have come. Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son, please sit on the prepared seat. The Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son sat on the prepared seat. Then, how did the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son establish his mind in equanimity? He disappeared from his seat and appeared in the sky above the eastern direction, performing four kinds of conduct, namely: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. He also entered into the fire samādhi. When he entered into the fire samādhi, the body of the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana's son emitted various kinds of rays, namely: blue, yellow, red, white, ruby, and crystal colors. He also performed twin miracles, causing fire to blaze from the lower part of his body and a stream of cold water to descend from the upper part of his body. Causing fire to blaze from the upper part of his body and a stream of cold water to descend from the lower part of his body, he entered into such a samādhi. Just as in the east, so also in the south, west, and north. Having shown four kinds of miracles in the four directions, he gathered up the miracles and sat on the prepared seat. Then, King Śuddhodana to the Venerable

He said to the great Maudgalyayana: Venerable great Maudgalyayana, are there other disciples of the Blessed One who are as miraculous and powerful as this? Great King, there are. Then he spoke in verse: Those who are powerful, possessing the three knowledges, Knowing the various aspects of the mind, And those who are Arhats with exhausted defilements, There are many disciples of the Conqueror. Then, King Suddhodana thought: Not only is my son so miraculous and powerful, but there are also other renunciates who are as miraculous and powerful as this. Thinking this, he departed from that great joy. At that time, the Blessed One generated a worldly thought, thinking: Alas, if gods such as Indra and Brahma come, I will teach the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods. By the nature of Dharma, when the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, generate a worldly thought, even the minds of creatures such as ants can understand the Blessed One's intention, let alone gods such as Indra and Brahma. When a supramundane thought is generated, even the minds of the great disciples cannot understand the Blessed One's intention, let alone gods such as Indra and Brahma. How could creatures such as ants possibly know? Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, thought: Why did the Blessed One generate a worldly thought? Then he thought: He intends to teach the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods. Then he instructed all the celestial artisans: Artisans, the Blessed One intends to teach the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods, so conjure up a four-jeweled mansion with various cushions arranged in the Nyagrodha Garden. Shika, your words are most excellent. Then, all the celestial artisans, having heard from Indra, the lord of the gods, conjured up a four-jeweled mansion with various cushions arranged in the Nyagrodha Garden. The four great kings, Dhritarashtra and Virudhaka, were seated at the four gates.

I, Virūḍhaka and Virūpākṣa, the east gate is adorned by Dhṛtarāṣṭra with the ornaments of the army, and earrings, rings, garlands, and various ornaments. The south is adorned by Virūḍhaka with all the ornaments of the gods. The west is adorned by Virūpākṣa with the seven precious things. The north is adorned by Virūḍhaka with all the ornaments. Then the lord of the gods, Indra, had the Nyagrodha monastery decorated in the great open space, and went to where the Blessed One was, and told the Blessed One about it in detail. Then Indra and Brahmā, and hundreds of thousands of gods surrounded him, entered the palace, and sat on a lion throne adorned with various jewels in the midst of the great assembly of gods. Then the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana led King Śuddhodana to where the Blessed One was, and after the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana entered, the great king Dhṛtarāṣṭra said to King Śuddhodana, "Great king, do not enter, please stay here." Why? The Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods, and it is not allowed for mortals to enter there. Fair-faced one, who are you? Great king, I am Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Then King Śuddhodana went to the south gate, and the great king Virūḍhaka saw him and said, "Great king, do not enter, please stay here." King Śuddhodana saw him and said, "Fair-faced one, who are you?" Virūḍhaka said, "Great king, I am Virūḍhaka." Why? The Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods, and it is not allowed for mortals to enter there. Then King Śuddhodana went to the west gate, and the great king Virūpākṣa saw him and said, "Great king, do not enter, please stay here." King Śuddhodana saw him and said, "Fair-faced one, who are you?" Virūpākṣa said, "Great king, I am Virūpākṣa." Why? The Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods, and it is not allowed for mortals to enter there. Then King Śuddhodana went to the north gate.
