If the merits of wisdom are not washed away, one can cross over to the other shore without wetting the body. King Śuddhodana asked: O hero, in your own palace, you bathe with gold and silver vases, but how do you bathe with water for those who are defiled and smelly? The Blessed One replied: Gautama, the stream of faith is without defilement, the entrance of merit is praised by the noble ones. If the merits of wisdom are not washed away, one can cross over to the other shore without wetting the body. King Śuddhodana asked: O hero, you used to bathe your body with sandalwood in Kapilavastu, and you came from the most beautiful place in Kashi, are you still beautiful after leaving those? The Blessed One replied: Morality is my ornament, morality itself is the anointment. What use are gold and jewels earrings to me, a fool? King Śuddhodana asked: Who makes you feel particularly disgusted? What gives rise to fear? And what gives rise to weariness? Please tell me these questions. The Blessed One replied: Who makes me disgusted, and what gives rise to fear, and what gives rise to weariness, listen, I will tell you. Old age, sickness, and death, if these three did not exist, I would also greatly enjoy those delightful places. King Śuddhodana asked: The joy of the Shakya clan, the hero well-born, you are not defiled by the eight worldly dharmas. Then, greatly rejoiced and increased faith, circumambulated the righteous sangha, bowed to the feet of the Buddha with his head, fully contemplated the Sugata and sat down. Then King Śuddhodana thought: My son has obtained such a collection of merits, my gain is very good. Then, the Blessed One, in the Nyagrodha Garden, knowing the thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature of that assembly, preached the Dharma that was in accordance with it. Having heard this, seventy-seven thousand Shakyas, including food, manifested the fruit of entering the stream, except for King Śuddhodana. Devadatta, being more arrogant than arrogance, desiring sin, did not see the truth, so he was completely controlled by anger.

The retinue and others said: "If I knew how to control with such illusions, I would also control the entire world." To this, the Shakyas said with words of rebuke: "Devadatta, the Blessed One has great miraculous powers, do not speak like that!" After dissuading him in this way, they remained silent. In the grove surrounded by Brahma, the Buddha taught the Dharma in this way. After hearing it, apart from King Suddhodana, sixty-six thousand Shakyas, including Drevo, attained the fruit of stream-entry. Even so, Devadatta still said the same thing as before. In the grove of Rohita, the Buddha taught the Dharma in this way. After hearing it, apart from King Suddhodana, seventy-five thousand Shakyas, including Amrita, attained the fruit of stream-entry. Even so, Devadatta still said the same thing as before. Among the remaining retinue, some generated the mind for the Bodhi of the Shravakas, some for the Bodhi of the Pratyekabuddhas, and some for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi. Some attained the fruit of stream-entry, some the fruit of once-returner, some the fruit of non-returner, and some, having renounced and abandoned all afflictions, became Arhats. Some took refuge in the Buddha, some in the Dharma, and some in the Sangha. Most of those retinues were inclined towards the Buddha, inclined towards the Dharma, and established in the Sangha. Then, King Suddhodana thought to himself: "In the past, the Blessed One was worshipped, remembered, and praised by gods and beings including asuras, but now only humans worship him, not the gods." Then, a young Shakya spoke in verse: "Great sage, eloquent speaker of the supreme Dharma, you satisfy beings with the rain of Dharma. Lead this world, fallen into the unbearable path, and connect them to the path of liberation." Then, the Blessed One thought: "King Suddhodana thinks that only my son is so miraculously powerful and so mighty," and even more...
