Having gone there, (thinking) I will ask the Bhikshu: Who is your teacher? For whom did you renounce? Whose Dharma do you like? Thinking thus, in a place where major roads converged, where people came and went frequently, (he) stayed there. Then, the venerable Aśvajit went to the wandering ascetic Upasena. Then, the wandering ascetic Upasena said these words to the venerable Aśvajit: Bhikshu, who is your teacher? For whom did you renounce? Whose Dharma do you like? The venerable (Aśvajit replied): The son of the Shakya clan, the Shramana Gautama, having shaved his hair and beard from the Shakya clan, wearing robes, having renounced from home to homelessness solely because of sincere faith, he attained the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, and became my teacher. I renounced for him. I like his Dharma. Bhikshu, please teach the Dharma for me! Venerable one, I am young and newly ordained, therefore it is not easy for me to extensively and correctly explain the teachings of that Bhagavan, Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One. However, I will explain its meaning in this way. Bhikshu, what is the use of many meaningful sentences for me? You explain the meaning, whether it is much or little. Then, the venerable Aśvajit then spoke in verse: Of those dharmas that arise from a cause, And their cause, and what their cessation is, Thus has the Tathagata declared; Such is the teaching of the Great Shramana. When this Dharma category was explained, the wandering ascetic Upasena developed the Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, towards the dharmas. Then, the wandering ascetic Upasena saw the Dharma, obtained the Dharma, understood the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended uncertainty, did not rely on others, was not mixed with others, and having obtained fearlessness towards the Dharmas taught by the teacher, straightened his upper body, extended his right hand, and bowed with folded palms towards the direction where the venerable Aśvajit was, at that time with a verse.

Having spoken the verses: This is the Dharma of the protectors. In hundreds of millions of kalpas, Never seen or heard before. On this state of deathlessness, free from sorrow, One realizes accordingly. Where does the venerable Blessed One reside now? The venerable one is in the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka residence in Rajagriha. Then, the wanderer Nyegyal, having praised and rejoiced in the words spoken by the venerable Ashvajit, bowed his head to the two feet of the venerable Ashvajit, circumambulated the venerable Ashvajit three times, and departed, going to where the wanderer Sanghavas was. The wanderer Sanghavas saw the wanderer Nyegyal from afar. Having seen him, he said this to the wanderer Nyegyal: Venerable one, your senses are clear, your complexion is pure, your skin is white, have you obtained the nectar? Venerable one, I have obtained it. Venerable one, therefore, teach the Dharma. Then, the wanderer Nyegyal at that time spoke the verses: Those dharmas that arise from causes, Their cause and their cessation, The Tathagata has declared, Such is the great Shramana's teaching. Venerable one, please say it again. Venerable one, it should be said. Those dharmas that arise from causes, and so on, as before. When this Dharma category was taught, the wanderer Sanghavas gave rise to the Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding the dharmas. Then, the wanderer Sanghavas, having seen the Dharma, obtained the Dharma, known the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, crossed over doubt, crossed over hesitation, not relying on others, not mixing with others, having obtained fearlessness in the dharmas taught by the teacher, straightened his upper body, stretched out his right hand, and bowed with folded palms towards where the wanderer Nyegyal was, and at that time spoke the verses: This is the Dharma of the protectors. In hundreds of millions of kalpas, Never seen or heard before. On this state of deathlessness, free from sorrow, One realizes accordingly.
