Most people strive for truth and enter into it. The Blessed One said: You have understood well, you have not thought wrongly. Among all the distinguished dharmas, you have chosen the most important. Kashyapa, generate weariness with samsara! Then, the venerable Kashyapa, having received instructions from the Blessed One, in order to calm his mind, disappeared into his own seat. He appeared in the sky above the east, displaying four kinds of deportment. As before, he displayed four kinds of miracles in the four directions, then gathered up the miracles, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with his palms joined, bowed towards the direction where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: The Blessed One is my teacher, I am the Blessed One's disciple. The Blessed One is my teacher, I am the Blessed One's disciple. Kashyapa, it is so, it is so. Kashyapa, I am your teacher, you are my disciple. Kashyapa, I am your teacher, you are my disciple. Kashyapa, return to your own seat! Then, the venerable Kashyapa bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought: This great Shramana does not practice the Brahmacharya of Kashyapa, but Kashyapa himself practices the Brahmacharya of this great Shramana. Then, the Blessed One said to King Bimbisara of Magadha, the well-crafted Prince of Form: Great King, form has arising, and it also has cessation, one should know its arising and cessation. Great King, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness also have arising, and they also have cessation, one should know their arising and cessation. Great King, a son of good family, knowing the nature of arising and cessation of form, completely understands that form.

Earth. O great king, a son of good family, having understood the nature of arising and ceasing of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, fully understands that consciousness. O great king, a son of good family, if he fully understands form, does not accept form as self or belonging to self, does not grasp, does not especially abide, does not manifestly cling. O great king, a son of good family, if he fully understands feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, does not accept as self or belonging to self, does not grasp, does not especially abide, does not manifestly cling. O great king, a son of good family, if he does not accept form as self or belonging to self, does not grasp, does not especially abide, does not manifestly cling, it is said that he has passed beyond immeasurable and countless sorrows. O great king, a son of good family, if he does not accept feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness as self or belonging to self, does not grasp, does not especially abide, does not manifestly cling, it is said that he has passed beyond immeasurable and countless sorrows. Then the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought thus: If form is not self, and feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are not self, then what is self? Or sentient being? Or life? Or the one who is born? Or the one who nourishes? Or the person? Or born of power? Or son of power? Or the doer? Or the one who causes to do? Or the knower? Or the all-knower? Or the solicitor? Or the all-solicitor? Or the speaker? Or the all-speaker? Or the feeler? Or the all-feeler? Who is it that has never come into being, will never come into being, and is not even now present, who, having done good and evil deeds there and there, experiences their respective ripenings, and who, having abandoned this aggregate, connects with another aggregate? Who would that be? Then the Blessed One, knowing the minds of the Brahmins and householders of Magadha, addressed the monks, saying: Monks, the term "self, self" is something that is followed by ignorant, unlearned common people. There is no self or belonging to self here. Monks, when arising, this suffering arises; and when ceasing, this suffering also ceases.

When arising, formations arise; and when ceasing, formations also cease. Dependent on that cause and that condition, the stream of formations of sentient beings continues. Monks, the Thus-Gone One, having understood the connection of formations, is able to indicate the death and birth of sentient beings. Monks, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, I see sentient beings passing away, and being born in the heavens of the good realms. As above, up to "knows." Monks, knowing thus and seeing thus, I do not say "I" or "sentient being," up to "feeler," as before. Because whatever has never occurred, will never occur, and does not exist now, if someone commits evil deeds, they will individually experience their results; if someone abandons this aggregate and connects with another aggregate, apart from designating it as a dharma, one does not say, "This is it." Therefore, the designation of dharma is this: This being, that is; this arising, that arises. For example: conditioned by ignorance, formations; conditioned by formations, consciousness; conditioned by consciousness, name and form; conditioned by name and form, the six sense bases; conditioned by the six sense bases, contact; conditioned by contact, feeling; conditioned by feeling, craving; conditioned by craving, grasping; conditioned by grasping, existence; conditioned by existence, birth; conditioned by birth, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and agitation arise. Thus, this great mass of suffering arises. For example: This not being, that is not; this ceasing, that ceases. For example: with the cessation of ignorance, formations cease; with the cessation of formations, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease; with the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease; with the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases; with the cessation of feeling
