I, if I were to attend with alms, bedding, medicine for sickness and ailments, and utensils, I beseech the Blessed One to go to Rajagriha. The Blessed One did not say anything to him, thus granting his request. Then, that person, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant consent, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and departed from the Blessed One's presence. Then, the Blessed One, together with the great Sangha of monks who had previously all been ascetics with matted hair, from those called Arhats, Exhausted of Defilements, to those called Completely Liberated in Mind by Correct Knowledge, all together, while traveling through the land of Magadha, went to the stupa of the people of Magadha, where there was a well-consecrated pavilion grove. Then, the Blessed One, having arrived at the well-consecrated place, stayed at the stupa of the people of Magadha, where there was a well-consecrated pavilion grove. King Bimbisara of Magadha heard that the Blessed One, together with the great Sangha of monks who had previously all been ascetics with matted hair, from those called the great Sangha of a thousand monks, to those called Completely Liberated in Mind, while traveling through the land of Magadha, had gone to the stupa of the people of Magadha, where there was a well-consecrated pavilion grove, and was staying at the stupa of the people of Magadha, where there was a well-consecrated pavilion grove. Having heard this, he entered a fine chariot, and with the great power of the king and the great wealth of the king, together with hundreds and thousands of horses and chariots, and hundreds of thousands of attendants, he set out from Rajagriha to see and attend to the Blessed One, and went to the presence of the Blessed One, when the wheels of his chariot became submerged in the earth. He thought, 'Have I done something slightly sinful?' The gods said to him, 'Great King, you have not done anything sinful, but those who are engaged in the same work as you are in prison, let them out.' The king said, 'If that is so, then release them.'

Then the king had all the prisoners released. When the king started to come out again, his headdress touched the door. He thought again, "I have not been eaten by demons, but have done a flawed deed, so I have this bad omen, my headdress touching the door." The gods said again, "Great king, although you have not done a flawed deed, some of those who have engaged in the same work as you are gathered together, and some are in other lands called so-and-so, doing the end of their work. Summon them all." The king summoned all the people living in that place. Then King Bimbisara, with twenty thousand chariots, eight thousand attendant cavalry, and countless Magadha Brahmins and householders, came out of the royal palace to see the Blessed One and to pay homage to him, and went before the Blessed One. They went by chariot as far as the ground allowed, and then got off the chariot and entered the pleasure garden on foot only. When King Bimbisara of Magadha, from afar, saw the Blessed One, he took off the five emblems of royalty: the hairpin, the umbrella, the sword, the jewel-handled fan, and the fancy shoes. Then King Bimbisara of Magadha, having laid down the five emblems of royalty, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and bowed with his palms joined together towards where the Blessed One was, and then, uttering his own name, addressed him three times: "Venerable sir, I am Bimbisara, the king of Magadha." "Venerable sir, I am Bimbisara, the king of Magadha." "King, yes, it is so." "It is so, great king, you are Bimbisara, the king of Magadha, great king, you are Bimbisara, the king of Magadha." "Yes, you are the king." "Great king, please sit on your own seat as you please." Then King Bimbisara of Magadha bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One.

Having paid homage, they sat down on one side. Some Brahmins and householders of Magadha bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Some, together with the Blessed One, engaged in various kinds of talk that would lead to manifest delight and satisfaction, and then sat down on one side. Some, in the direction where the Blessed One was, sat with their palms joined in reverence. Some saw the Blessed One from afar and sat down on one side without saying a word. At that time, the venerable Jatila Kashyapa, together with his retinue, gathered there and sat down. Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought to themselves: Is the great ascetic practicing in the Brahmacharya of Jatila Kashyapa? Or is Jatila Kashyapa practicing in the Brahmacharya of the great ascetic? Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of the Brahmins and householders of Magadha with his mind, questioned the venerable Jatila Kashyapa with a verse: Kashyapa, dwelling here, what do you see? Having abandoned fire, you practice these austerities. How did you abandon the fire sacrifice? Tell me that reason, Kashyapa. Jatila Kashyapa replied: Here, some only talk about food, drink, and desires, and women alone. I clearly see those as a collection of defilements, therefore I do not like sacrifice and fire offerings. The Blessed One asked: If you do not like desires, food, drink, and taste, then what does your mind delight in among gods, humans, and the world? Kashyapa, tell me with a question. Kashyapa replied: There is no collection, no peace, no attachment to desire, no change. I have seen the supreme state that is not mixed with others, therefore I do not like sacrifice and fire offerings. The Blessed One asked: Because you have not seen the supreme state that does not diminish, through sacrifice, austerity, and pure conduct, thinking to be liberated, my mind has become deluded, like a blind person, only seeing the traces of birth and death. The protector, the chief, has well explained the state of non-compounding and endurance, O Sage Gautama, you are truly a guide!
