With the cessation of ignorance, craving ceases. With the cessation of craving, grasping ceases. With the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases. With the cessation of becoming, birth ceases. With the cessation of birth, aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair cease. Thus, the entire mass of suffering ceases. Monks, formations are suffering. Nirvana is peace. With the arising of causes, suffering arises; with the cessation of causes, suffering ceases. Because the continuum is cut off, it does not arise; because there is no connection, it ceases. This itself is the end of suffering. Monks, what is complete nirvana? The cessation of suffering without remainder, that is peace, that is coolness, that is extinction. Monks, this is the place of peace, that is, the abandonment of all aggregates, the exhaustion of craving, detachment, cessation, nirvana. Then the Blessed One spoke twice to King Bimbisara of Magadha. Great king, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable sir, it is impermanent. Is that which is impermanent suffering or not suffering? Venerable sir, it is suffering. Regarding that which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, would a noble disciple who has heard the teachings consider this to be 'This is me,' 'This is who I am,' 'This is my self'? Venerable sir, no. Great king, what do you think? Is feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness permanent or impermanent? Venerable sir, it is impermanent. Is that which is impermanent suffering or not suffering? Venerable sir, it is suffering. Regarding that which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, would a noble disciple who has heard the teachings consider this to be 'This is me,' 'This is who I am,' 'This is my self'?

Whether far or near, for all of these, this is not me. I am not this. This is not my self, it should be viewed as it is with true wisdom. Great King, therefore, whether it is feeling, perception, formation, or any kind of consciousness, whether it is past, future, or present, whether it is internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or excellent, whether far or near, for all of these, this is not me. I am not this. This is not my self, it should be viewed as it is with true wisdom. Great King, a noble disciple who is learned, seeing thus, will also become disgusted with form. He will also become disgusted with feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. If he becomes disgusted, he will be separated from desire. If he is separated from desire, he will be liberated. If he is liberated, he will know that my birth is exhausted, the pure conduct has been established, what had to be done has been done, there is no other existence, thus he will see the wisdom of liberation. When this Dharma discourse was spoken, the Magadha king Skilled in Form, together with eighty thousand gods, the Brahmins of Magadha, and hundreds of thousands of householders, arose the Dharma eye, stainless and without impurity, in the Dharma. Then, the Magadha king Skilled in Form, having seen the Dharma, attained the Dharma, known the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended hesitation, transcended doubt, not relying on others, not mixing with others, having obtained fearlessness in the Dharmas taught by the Teacher, arose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together in reverence towards the Blessed One, said this to the Blessed One: Venerable One, I have attained. I have manifestly attained. Venerable One, I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks, please accept me as a lay follower, from this day forth for as long as I live, even at the cost of my life.

I have unwavering faith in taking refuge. Venerable One, I will attend to the Venerable One and the Sangha of monks with robes, alms, lodging, and medicine for ailments, as long as I live. May the Venerable One go to Rajagriha. Venerable One, the Magadha king of Rajagriha, Skilled-in-form Heart, did not say anything, so he permitted it. Then, the Magadha king Skilled-in-form Heart, knowing that the Venerable One's silence meant permission, bowed to the Venerable One's feet with his head and departed from the Venerable One's presence. Then, the Venerable One traveled from Magadha and arrived at Rajagriha, residing in the Bamboo Grove Monastery in Rajagriha. At that time, a heretic named "Truly Victorious" arose in Rajagriha, and not long after, their teacher passed away. Among them, two named Near Victory and Born-from-the-side gathered all the followers and became the leaders of the group, leading the group, and those two made a vow, saying: 'Among us youths, even if one of us finds the nectar first, we shall tell each other.' Then, the venerable Ashvajit, having dressed in his lower robes in the morning, took his bowl and Dharma robes and, walking, returning, looking slightly, looking around, contracting, stretching, with his monastic robe and Dharma robes and carrying his bowl gracefully, entered Rajagriha for alms. At that time, the wandering ascetic Near Victory, having entered the vicinity of Rajagriha for some matter, saw the venerable Ashvajit walking, returning, looking slightly, looking around, contracting, stretching, with his monastic robe and Dharma robes and carrying his bowl gracefully, going for alms in Rajagriha from afar. Having seen him, he thought to himself: 'Among the many renunciates who have come and stayed in this Rajagriha, I have never seen such conduct as this renunciate's before. Could it be that I cannot...'
