They also practiced conduct. They accomplished what needed to be done. They understood, "There is no other existence beyond this." Those venerable ones, with minds completely liberated, became Arhats possessing all knowledge. At that time, there were ten Arhats in the world, and the eleventh was the Blessed One. In Varanasi, fifty sons of prominent citizens, namely the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth sons of the leading families, known as Fame, Wealthy, Immaculate, Owner of Cattle, and Good Hand, respectively, heard that these sons of leading families had shaved their hair and beards, donned saffron robes, and gone forth from home to homelessness solely out of pure faith. Having heard this, they thought to themselves: 'Alas! The Buddha is not without excellence, and the Dharma taught is not without excellence. For now, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth sons of the leading families, namely Fame, Wealthy, Immaculate, Owner of Cattle, and Good Hand, these sons of leading families, who are still very young and desire great happiness, have shaved their hair and beards, donned saffron robes, and gone forth from home to homelessness solely out of pure faith. Why shouldn't we also shave our hair and beards, don saffron robes, and go forth from home to homelessness solely out of pure faith?' Then, those fifty sons of the city's prominent citizens departed from Varanasi and went to where the Blessed One was. Upon arriving, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, those fifty sons of the leading citizens said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, if the Blessed One would grant us ordination and full acceptance into the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline, as monks, we would practice the holy life in the presence of the Blessed One.' Those venerable ones received ordination and full acceptance as monks in the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline. Having thus gone forth, those venerable ones, alone in secluded places, being vigilant, diligent, and persevering,

Now abide in creation. Alone in solitude, being mindful, possessing steadiness, abiding in creation oneself, for what reason did those sons of good families, as before, until their minds were completely liberated, become Arhats possessing omniscience? At that time, there were sixty Arhats in the world, and the sixty-first was the Bhagavan (Blessed One). Then, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) resided in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in Vārāṇasī. Then, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) addressed the monks: "Monks, I am liberated from all the bonds of gods and humans. Monks, you too are liberated from all the bonds of gods and humans. Monks, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans, go forth and wander. Let not two of you go together. I too will go to wander to the village of Jeṅgyas." Then, the evil Mara thought: "This Śramaṇa Gautama, residing in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in Vārāṇasī, is teaching the Dharma to the Śrāvakas, saying thus: 'Monks, I am liberated from all the bonds of gods and humans. Monks, you too are liberated from all the bonds of gods and humans. Monks, for the benefit of many beings,' and so on, up to 'go forth and wander.' He also says, 'I will go to wander to the village of Jeṅgyas.' I should do this to him, I will approach him in order to create confusion." Then, the evil Mara manifested himself in the form of a Brahmin boy, went to where the Bhagavan (Blessed One) was, sat before the Bhagavan (Blessed One), and asked in verse: "If one perceives the unliberated as liberated, how does one think oneself liberated? If the Śramaṇa himself is not liberated, he is bound by great bonds." Then, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) thought: "Alas! This is the evil Mara, he has approached in order to create confusion," and understanding this in his heart, responded in verse:
