When he saw that he was able to understand the excellent Dharma, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, extensively explained what the true excellent Dharma was, namely the four noble truths: suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. Just as a clean, spotless cloth placed in a suitable dye can absorb the dye well, so too, the son of the lineage holder, Grakpa, while sitting on that very seat, realized the four noble truths: suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. Then, the son of the lineage holder, Grakpa, having seen the Dharma, attained the Dharma, known the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended hesitation, not relying on others, not mixing with others, having attained fearlessness in the Dharmas taught by the Teacher, rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and with folded palms turned towards where the Bhagavat was, and said this to the Bhagavat: "Venerable one, I am noble! I am manifestly noble! I go for refuge to the Bhagavat, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Please accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, for as long as I live, I will rely on refuge even at the cost of my life." A maidservant, waking from sleep that very night, saw that the youth Grakpa was not to be seen in his great bed. Having seen this, she went to where the householder, the chief of the lineage, was, and having arrived, she said this to the householder, the chief of the lineage: "Master, be aware! The youth Grakpa is not in his own great bed." Then the householder, the chief of the lineage, thought to himself: "Could it be that the youth, for the sake of wealth, has been taken away by thieves or deceitful people?" Thinking thus, he sent messengers and horsemen in the four directions, and he himself, together with those carrying lamps in their hands, went to the dangerous river. The householder, the chief of the lineage, saw a pair of jeweled shoes worth a hundred thousand, taken off at the bank of the dangerous river. Having seen this, he thought to himself: "Could it be that the youth, for the sake of weal

Or thieves or cunning people did not take him outside, but like this, on the bank of the harmful river, he took off a pair of precious shoes worth a hundred thousand, and the young man did not cross this bank of the harmful river. Like this, thinking that he had lost a pair of precious shoes worth a hundred thousand on the bank of the harmful river, he crossed that bank of the harmful river and went to where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One saw the head of the householder's family from afar. Having seen him, he thought, 'In any case, I must manifest magical powers. By manifesting what kind of magical powers, can I make the head of the householder's family not see the young name sitting on this very cushion?' Then, the Blessed One manifested what kind of magical powers, so that the head of the householder's family did not see the young name sitting on that very cushion. Then, the head of the householder's family went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he said to the Blessed One, 'Blessed One, do you see the young name?' 'Householder, sit down, and on this very cushion, you will see the place where the young name is sitting.' Then, the head of the householder's family thought, 'Without a doubt, the Blessed One has seen the young name, so the Blessed One said this: Householder, sit down, and on this very cushion, you will see the place where the young name is sitting.' Having realized this, he felt joy, satisfaction, great joy, great joy, and peace of mind, and then he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the Blessed One gave the head of the householder's family a correct teaching with words in accordance with the Dharma, and so on, as before. When this Dharma category was explained, the head of the householder's family developed a Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, towards the Dharma. Venerable Name.
