They also proclaimed the sound, "Friends, the Blessed One, at Varanasi in the Deer Park at Isipatana, has turned the Wheel of Dharma, endowed with Dharma, in twelve aspects and three rounds, which has not been turned by any ascetic or Brahmin, or god, or demon, or Brahma, or anyone in the world in accordance with Dharma, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, out of compassion for the world, for the sake of the gods and humans, for their benefit and happiness, so the race of gods has manifestly increased, and the race of non-gods has completely diminished." Having heard the sound of the earth-dwelling yakshas, from the yakshas who travel in the sky, and the retinue of the Four Great Kings, and the gods of the Thirty-Three, the No-Conflict, the Joyful, the Delightful Transformation, and the gods who control others' transformations, from that instant, that moment, that instant, that moment, that instant, that moment, the sound resounded up to the Brahma world. The gods of the Brahma realm also proclaimed the sound: Friends, the Blessed One, at Varanasi in the Deer Park at Isipatana, has turned the Wheel of Dharma, endowed with Dharma, in twelve aspects and three rounds, which has not been turned by any ascetic or Brahmin, or god, or demon, or Brahma, or anyone in the world in accordance with Dharma, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, out of compassion for the world, for the sake of the gods and humans, for their benefit and happiness, so the race of gods has manifestly increased, and the race of non-gods has completely diminished. Because the Blessed One, at Varanasi in the Deer Park at Isipatana, has turned the Wheel of Dharma, endowed with Dharma, in twelve aspects and three rounds, therefore this aspect of Dharma is solemnly named "Turning the Wheel of Dharma." Then, the Blessed One spoke twice to the five monks: "Monks, these are the Four Noble Truths. Which four? The Noble Truth of Suffering, the Origin of Suffering, the Cessation of Suffering, and the Noble Truth of the Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering."

O! What is the Noble Truth of Suffering? Birth is suffering, aging is suffering, sickness is suffering, death is suffering, separation from what is loved is suffering, encountering what is not loved is suffering, and not getting what one wants is also suffering. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering. In order to fully understand this, the Noble Eightfold Path should be practiced. What is the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering? It is the craving for re-existence, which is associated with delight and desire, and seeks enjoyment in one thing after another. In order to abandon it, the Noble Eightfold Path should be practiced. What is the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering? It is the complete and unreserved abandonment, relinquishment, elimination, exhaustion, detachment, cessation, pacification, and disappearance of that very craving for re-existence, which is associated with delight and desire, and seeks enjoyment in one thing after another. In order to realize this, the Noble Eightfold Path should be practiced. What is the Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering? It is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This also should be practiced. When this discourse on the Dharma was being delivered, the venerable Kaundinya, possessing complete understanding, had his mind liberated from defilements without clinging. And to the remaining group of five monks, there arose the eye of Dharma, stainless and immaculate, regarding the things of Dharma. At that time, there was one Arhat in the world, and the second was the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One again addressed the remaining group of five monks, saying: Monks, form is not self. Monks, if form were self, form would not be subject to harm and suffering, and one could obtain the thought, 'May my form be thus, may it not be thus.' Monks, because form is not self, form is subject to harm and suffering, and one cannot obtain the thought, 'May my

May form become like this! May it not become like that! Such a wish is also impossible to obtain. Monks, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are not self. Monks, if consciousness were self, consciousness would not be subject to harm and suffering, and for consciousness, one could obtain the wish, 'May my consciousness become like this! May it not become like that!' Monks, because consciousness is not self, consciousness is subject to harm and suffering, and for consciousness, one cannot obtain the wish, 'May my consciousness become like this! May it not become like that!' Monks, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable sir, impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is that suffering or not suffering? Venerable sir, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, would a noble disciple who has heard and learned consider that to be 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'? Venerable sir, no. Monks, what do you think? Is feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness permanent or impermanent? Venerable sir, impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is that suffering or not suffering? Venerable sir, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, would a noble disciple who has heard and learned consider that to be 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'? Venerable sir, no. Therefore, monks, whatever form there is, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or excellent, far or near, all of that is not self, I am not that, that is not my self. Thus, it should be viewed with right wisdom as it actually is. Therefore, monks, whatever feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness there is, whatever it may be, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or
