Having thought and settled down well, they made a rule: "Learned ones, the ascetic Gautama is unstable, has many affairs, lives by many, has declined in renunciation, now eats a lot of rice and warm porridge, anoints his body with sesame oil and sesame oil, and bathes his body with warm water. When he comes to us, we should not speak to him, not salute him, not rise, and not offer him a seat." Otherwise, on the narrow seat that is only laid out, say these words: "Venerable Gautama, there is a seat, if you wish, please sit down." Thus they made the rule. As the Blessed One approached to see the five monks, the five monks could not bear the Blessed One's splendor, glory, and reverence, and rose from their seats. Some prepared seats for the Blessed One, some placed water for washing feet and footrests on one side. Some welcomed him, took his robes and Dharma robes, and said: "Learned Gautama, please come here. Learned Gautama, welcome. Learned Gautama, please sit on the prepared seat." Then the Blessed One thought: "Alas, these foolish people have made a rule and broken it themselves." Having thought this, he sat on the prepared seat. Then the five monks addressed the Blessed One even more by his name, by his lineage, and by the title 'Venerable,' always addressing him in this way. Then the Blessed One said to the five monks: "Monks, do not address the Tathagata by his name, by his lineage, or by the title 'Venerable,' always addressing him in this way. This will be harmful to you for a long time, not beneficial, and will lead to suffering. Why is that? Monks, whoever addresses the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, by his name, by his lineage, or by the title 'Venerable,' always addressing him in this way, that will be harmful to that foolish person for a long time, not beneficial, and will lead to suffering." They replied: "Venerable

Endowed Gautama, can you, for the time being, with your previous conduct, behavior, and asceticism, attain the distinction of surpassing human dharma? If you have not attained even a little bit of knowing, seeing, and touching, now you are unstable, with many affairs, sustained by many, and abandoning decline, now you eat a lot of food with rice and warm porridge, and anoint your body with sesame oil and sesame oil, and bathe your body with warm water, what more needs to be said? Bhikshu, do you see that the face and senses of the Tathagata are bright, different from before? They replied, saying: Venerable Gautama, it is so. Then, the Blessed One said to the five bhikshus: Bhikshus, those who have gone forth should not rely on these two extremes, should not approach, should not respectfully approach. Which two? For desires, pursuing the merit of desire, which is inferior, evil, base, vulgar; and pursuing self-fatigue, which is painful, unholy, and harmful. You should not rely on these two extremes, the Middle Way is the eye that produces, the wisdom that produces, that which draws near to peace, that which manifests, that which perfects enlightenment, that which leads to nirvana. What is the Middle Way? It is this eightfold noble path, namely right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The Blessed One made the five bhikshus know with what should be known, and with conduct, the Blessed One, among the five bhikshus, when teaching two in the morning, three entered the city for alms, and what the three accomplished, all six could live on. When the Blessed One taught three of the five bhikshus in the afternoon, two entered the city for alms, and what the two accomplished, the five could live on, and the Tathagata only ate in the morning.
