The gods entreated the Blessed One: Venerable one, it has been seven days since the son of Skillful Arts passed away. The Blessed One also entered into contemplation and generated the vision of wisdom, it has been seven days since the son of Skillful Arts, Long Flight, died. Then the Blessed One thought to himself: Alas! The death of the son of Skillful Arts, Long Flight, is indeed unfortunate. Alas! The death of the son of Skillful Arts, Long Flight, is extremely unfortunate, for he has not heard this Dharma and Discipline. If he had heard this Dharma and Discipline, he might have understood. Then the Blessed One thought to himself: To whom should I first teach the Dharma? Then the Blessed One thought to himself: I should first teach the Dharma to the son of Pure Conduct, Fond of Practice, for he was my first teacher, forgetting with the holy ones who forget, honoring with the holy ones who honor, and also rejoicing and believing in the holy ones who have attained realization. The gods entreated the Blessed One: Venerable one, the son of Pure Conduct, Fond of Practice, passed away yesterday at dusk. The Blessed One entered into contemplation and generated the vision of wisdom, the son of Pure Conduct, Fond of Practice, passed away at dusk. Then the Blessed One thought to himself: Alas! The death of the son of Pure Conduct, Fond of Practice, is indeed unfortunate. Alas! The death of the son of Pure Conduct, Fond of Practice, is extremely unfortunate, for he has not heard this Dharma and Discipline. If he had heard this Dharma and Discipline, he might have understood. Then the Blessed One thought to himself: To whom should I first teach the Dharma? Then he thought to himself: I should first teach the Dharma to the five monks, for they stayed with me earlier when I was engaged in the practice of abandoning suffering, with reverence, respect, and affection. Then the Blessed One thought to himself: Where are the five monks now? With the divine eye of the Blessed One, which is pure and transcends human limitations, he saw the five monks dwelling in Varanasi, in the Deer Park where the sages speak. Saw

After that, the Blessed One, as much as he desired, remained under the Bodhi tree, and then traveled to the city of Kashi in Varanasi. At that time, a man named Kuntu Tsonyer Dro was walking on that very road. Kuntu Tsonyer Dro saw the Blessed One coming from the road. Having seen him, he asked, "Ascetic Gautama, your senses are subdued, your complexion is very clear, and your skin is bright. Gautama, who is your teacher? From whom did you go forth? Whose teachings do you delight in?" The Blessed One then answered in verse: "There is no one like me, I have no teacher, I am the only Buddha in the world, Having attained the supreme perfect enlightenment. I subdue all, I am the all-knowing one in the world, I am not stained by any Dharma. I have abandoned all, free from desire and liberated, Having realized it myself, whom do I rely on? The Tathagata is the teacher of gods and humans, Possessing all the powers of omniscience, Having realized enlightenment himself, he teaches, Incomparable and without equal, whom do I rely on? I am the Arhat in the world, I am the supreme one in the world, In the world including the gods, I am the victor, subduing the armies of Mara. Reverend Gautama, do you say victor? Who has attained the exhaustion of defilements? Know that the victor is like me. Because I have destroyed sinful dharmas, Therefore, Nyer Dro, I am the victor. Reverend Gautama, where are you going? I will go to Varanasi, I will beat the drum of Dharma, Which has not been turned by the world. I will turn the wheel of Dharma, Transcending the attachments of the world, The all-knowing, peaceful Buddha, If the world has not been liberated, The noble being will not be renowned." Reverend Gautama, victor, very good!" Having said this, Kuntu Tsonyer Dro departed from the road. After that, the Blessed One traveled in the region of Kashi and arrived in Varanasi. At that time, the five monks were dwelling in the Deer Park at Isipatana in Varanasi. The five monks saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, they made an agreement among themselves:
