Then, a person who was striving for fire, a fire-seeker, came and used that as a fire-drilling base. Even when he placed the drill and drilled, because the wood was dry and hollow, it was not possible to produce fire and ignite it. Similarly, some ascetics or Brahmins who remain distant from desires with body and mind, those who have desire for desires, attachment to desires, joy in desires, clinging to desires, infatuation with desires, and excessive attachment to desires, what is that? That is that their minds are completely consumed by desires, so they cannot abide. Although they experience such unbearable, rough, hot, and unpleasant painful feelings that harm themselves, they are still able to know, able to see, able to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. In this regard, this was the third simile that appeared to the Bodhisattva that he had not heard before. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: All those who strive to abandon suffering are limited to this, and there is nothing more than that. If there is not even this, then this path cannot be known, cannot be seen, and cannot be attained to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What is the path that can be known, can be seen, and can be attained to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? He thought to himself: When I was living in the palace of my father, the Shakya king Śuddhodana, I went to the edge of the field and sat in the shade of a jambu tree, away from desires, away from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, the joy and happiness born from seclusion, I approached and dwelt in the first dhyana, I remembered that, that is the path, that is the practice, able to know, able to see, able to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. To that, even if I were to arise, it would not be easy with such leanness, weakness, and frailty, so I should not do that, I should breathe in and out comfortably, and comfortably eat coarse rice and warm porridge, and nourish the body.
