At that very moment, the request was fulfilled. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: 'This path cannot be understood, cannot be seen, and cannot lead to the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: 'I should eat very unpleasant food.' So he ate very unpleasant food. That coarse food was like this: the urine and feces of those calves that had not been long since they were born and drank milk. Until the radiance of his body disappeared, he did not eat a second meal. After the radiance disappeared, he ate another meal. Having gone to the great charnel ground, he placed the head of a corpse under his head and placed his feet on its feet. He slept on his right side, focusing his mind with the awareness of appearance, mindfulness, and clear comprehension. At that time, the young men and young women of the city came and inserted wooden sticks into the holes of his two ears, pulling them out from both ears, and saying, 'Look at the flesh-eater in the charnel ground! Look at the flesh-eater in the charnel ground!' They also said this. At that time, they also threw garbage, clods of earth, and tiles. However, the Bodhisattva did not harbor ill will or utter sinful words towards the young men or young women of the city. Because the Bodhisattva practiced great austerities, he became known as the Great Ascetic, the Great Ascetic. In this way, he practiced austerities for six years. Then, three gods came to where the Bodhisattva was. Then, one god said this: 'The ascetic Gautama is black.' The second god said this: 'He is not black, but rather blue.' The third god said this: 'He is neither black nor blue, but rather reddish-brown.' The beautiful color of the Bodhisattva's body completely and utterly vanished. Then, at that time, the Bodhisattva heard three examples that he had not heard before, like this:

A wet, watery tree is taken out of the water and placed nearby to dry. Then, a person who seeks fire, a fire seeker, comes here, and he uses it as a base for drilling wood to make fire, puts the drill wood on it, and starts drilling. Like this, because the tree is wet and watery, it is impossible to generate fire and burn. Similarly, some ascetics or Brahmins, regarding desires, their body and mind do not remain distant. Regarding those desires, they have desire for desires, attachment to desires, joy in desires, clinging to desires, infatuation with desires, and special attachment to desires. These are all their minds completely attached to this, because they do not abide, so their body and mind do not remain distant, they are just like that. Although they experience such painful feelings that are harmful to themselves, unbearable, rough, hot, and unpleasant, yet they are unable to know, unable to see, unable to attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. At that time, this is the first analogy that appeared to the Bodhisattva that he had not heard before. For example, a wet, watery tree is taken out of the water and placed nearby to dry.
