If I have meditative stabilization and wisdom, why can't I, like Udraka Ramaputra, the son of Rancchaka, realize these dharmas between the sphere of nothingness and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? Then, the Bodhisattva, in order to attain those dharmas that had not been attained, in order to realize those dharmas that had not been realized, and in order to manifest those dharmas that had not been manifested, dwelt alone in solitude, being vigilant, endowed with diligence, and abiding in self-exertion. When he dwelt alone in solitude, being vigilant and abiding in self-exertion, he soon realized those dharmas. Having realized those dharmas, the Bodhisattva went to where Udraka Ramaputra, the son of Rancchaka, was, and said to Udraka Ramaputra: Udraka, have you yourself realized these dharmas between the sphere of nothingness and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? Udraka replied: Yes, venerable Gautama, I have realized these dharmas between the sphere of nothingness and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. The Bodhisattva said: Venerable Udraka, I too have myself realized these dharmas between the sphere of nothingness and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Udraka said: Venerable Gautama, in that case, what you have attained is the same as what I have attained, and what I have attained is the same as what you have attained. In this matter, we are equal, alike, and undifferentiated. Venerable, please come closer, and we two will jointly manage this sangha. Then, Udraka Ramaputra, the son of Rancchaka, honored and revered the Bodhisattva with the highest respect and reverence, regarding the Bodhisattva as his first teacher, and was delighted and satisfied with the Bodhisattva's wisdom. After that, the Bodhisattva thought: This path does not lead to wisdom, does not lead to enlightenment, and does not lead to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Then, the Bodhisattva, realizing that this path was useless, departed. After that, three disciples of Arada Kalama, the son of Skillful Knowledge, and two disciples of Udraka Ramaputra, the son of Rancchaka—these five ascetics followed the Bodhisattva.

Then he followed. After that, the Bodhisattva, together with those five, went south of the Ganges River to a village called Adorned Light Protector, where they walked around, going back and forth, and saw a place that was very delightful, with lush and beautiful forests, the Nairanjana River flowing coolly, full of grass, with an easy and wide entrance, covered with green grass and various trees, which was very delightful. Having seen it, he thought: Alas, this place is truly delightful, with lush and beautiful forests, the Nairanjana River flowing coolly, full of grass, with an easy and wide entrance, covered with green grass and various trees, which is very delightful. Alas, a good man who seeks seclusion can practice seclusion by relying on this forest. Since I am a seeker of seclusion, I should also rely on this forest to practice seclusion. Then the Bodhisattva entered the forest and came to the foot of a tree, teeth clenched against teeth, tongue pressed against the palate, mind focused on mind, restrained, very restrained. As he focused his mind on his mind, restrained, very restrained, all the pores of his skin began to sweat. For example, if a strong man binds a very weak man, restrains him, and restrains him very much, all the pores of that man will sweat. Similarly, at that time, the Bodhisattva clenched his teeth against his teeth, pressed his tongue against his palate, focused his mind on his mind, restrained, very restrained, and so on, just as before. Then the Bodhisattva thought: I should enter into the meditation of non-breathing. So he began to enter into the meditation of non-breathing. When he entered into the meditation of non-breathing, he stopped breathing in and out through his mouth and nose. When he stopped breathing in and out through his mouth and nose, all the air entered the top of his head, and an extremely unbearable sensation of the head arose in his head.
