Thinking, "Will I not return to my own city?" (He) looked with an elephant-like gaze to the right of everyone and said: Until I have attained the supreme path taught by the Buddhas, I will not return to the foundation of Kapilavastu. After saying this, (the people) circumambulated the Bodhisattva's feet three times and then went to their respective places. The Bodhisattva dismounted from his steed, removed his ornaments, and commanded the attendant: Attendant, take the ornaments and the horse and return. Here it is said: Charioteer, you take this horse of mine, and these ornaments as well, give them to the relatives. I have abandoned great desires, and now I will renounce right here. These desires are like the edge of a razor, like a burning pit of fire, and have evil consequences. For the benefit of the world, I abandon them with compassion, and after going to a solitary place, I will not return home. Then, with tears streaming down his face like rain, the attendant pleaded with the Bodhisattva: In the forest filled with lions and tigers, and filled with herdsmen, alone, separated from relatives, how will you, noble one, practice? The Bodhisattva said: Beings are born alone when they are born, and likewise, they die alone when they die. This is to experience suffering alone, there are no friends in samsara. The attendant pleaded: Alas! The young one has not seen suffering, soft feet accustomed to riding elephants and horses, on the rough ground filled with grass and stones, how will you walk with your feet and wander in the forest? The Bodhisattva said: The fear of death, no matter how many times, will not disappear because of happiness, will not disappear because of being accustomed to comfort, will not disappear because of having protectors, will not disappear because of noble birth, not a hero nor a sage, not a happy person. Old age will generate the fear of death, it is said that (death) will come. Without accomplishing meaningful things, without beginning (practice), one will also go to death. The attendant pleaded: The aged king will die from the grief of losing his son. However, the Bodhisattva, in order to accumulate the accumulations of enlightenment, did not heed the attendant's words. Then, the Bodhisattva drew from its sheath a sword like a blue lotus and cut off the crest jewel from his head, towards the sky.

After (the horse) was abandoned, the lord of the gods, Indra, welcomed it and offered great homage, taking it to the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens, and established a grand crest offering. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: This young man is of the Kshatriya caste and possesses manifest pride, so he cannot be stopped. Thinking this, he was pleased. Then, the Bodhisattva said to Chandaka: Do not mix (the horse) into the Palace of Good Name. After saying this, Chandaka wailed and his eyes filled with tears, leading the horse king Good Name, looking at the Bodhisattva again and again as he left, and when he arrived at Kapilavastu, there was a great clamor. After a while, he said to King Śuddhodana: The heavenly youth has arrived, please make him happy. A great shout of joy also resounded in the city of Kapilavastu. When the horse king Good Name entered the palace, all the consorts embraced Good Name's neck and began to weep. Good Name also held his breath and died immediately. After death, he took rebirth as the son of a Brahmin who was proficient in the six Vedas. Then, the Bodhisattva gradually went to the hermitage of the ascetic Arada Kalama. At that time, the son of the ascetic Arada Kalama was holding his cheek with his hand, deep in thought. The Bodhisattva saw this and said: Great ascetic, why are you holding your cheek with your hand, deep in thought? He replied: In this hermitage of mine, all the tala trees used to have golden leaves, flowers, and fruits, but now they are no longer as they were before. The Bodhisattva said: Great ascetic, by what power do the tala trees in this hermitage have golden leaves, flowers, and fruits? It is because he truly saw old age, sickness, and death, and thus became disgusted and lived in the forest of asceticism. If he had not truly seen old age, sickness, and death, and thus become disgusted and lived in the forest of asceticism, then this garden would be his. After saying this, the son of the ascetic Arada Kalama looked at the Bodhisattva.
