He went forth from home to homelessness, therefore I am called a renunciate. O man, you have recognized that taming is good, complete discipline is good, practicing meaning is good, practicing Dharma is good, practicing virtue is good, practicing auspiciousness is good, having shaved your hair and beard, and donned the ochre robe, it is good to go forth from home to homelessness with only true faith. Then, the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni said to the charioteer: Charioteer, therefore, turn the chariot back! We shall go to the palace. Like this, after I go to the palace, I shall contemplate this matter. The charioteer turned the chariot back and then went to the palace. There, after arriving at the palace, the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni thought: Alas, I shall shave my hair and beard, don the ochre robe, and go forth from home to homelessness with only true faith. Then, King Suddhodana spoke to the charioteer, and so on, as before. Then, Mahaprajapati dreamed a dream, dreaming that Indra's crest fell, the Shakyas were filled with brooms, the earth overturned, splendor arose from the house, outside sometimes crying and sometimes laughing, watching oneself, and the sun rose from where it rose and set from there. When the Bodhisattva heard this, he thought: I am the place of the crest of Indra of the Shakyas, If I come out of the city, splendor will arise. King Suddhodana also dreamed a dream, dreaming that the splendorous bed broke and the father's lineage was cut off. When the Bodhisattva heard this, he thought: It is just so, I have become the place of splendor of the earth-holder, and I have become the place of the lineage of the father of Suddhodana, if I go forth, the lineage of the Shakyas will be cut off. The soothsayers prophesied before King Suddhodana: If the youth does not go forth within seven days, he will become a Chakravartin king. They also said this: If you wish to see his goodness, then protect him for seven days! O King, like spreading out an umbrella.

Indeed, there is no doubt that the seven treasures will appear. Your son, the lord of these seven treasures, will become a king ruling in all directions. His rule will extend to the ends of the ocean, never waning. However, if he abandons the throne and fearlessly enters the forest, he will attain all wisdom and liberate sentient beings. I have heard these prophecies. Having heard them, King Śuddhodana, King Śuklodana, King Dronodana, and King Amṛtodana gathered together and began to deliberate. The wise, the astrologers, and the Brahmin diviners had prophesied that if the Bodhisattva Śākyamuni did not renounce within seven days, he would become a Chakravartin king. Therefore, we must diligently guard the Bodhisattva for seven days and protect the city well. Then, they surrounded the city of Kapilavastu with seven layers of walls and seven layers of moats. The city gates were made of iron, and on the gates were hung bells with very clear sounds. When the gates were opened, the sound would be heard for a yojana around. The Bodhisattva resided in the upper palace, attended by beautiful and graceful women with performances of dance, song, and music. A very large, movable staircase, carried by five hundred men, was made. The place for the noble steeds was covered with copper tiles and surrounded by a net of golden bells. The Bodhisattva, having entered the upper palace without any men, enjoyed various musical instruments such as the lute, flute, kharanga, zither, and lived in great prosperity. At night, King Śuddhodana himself, with the four divisions of his army, stayed outside the east gate. Dronodana was at the south gate, Śuklodana was at the west gate, and Amṛtodana was at the north gate. The one patrolling the center of the city was Śākya Mingchen, who was endowed with the four divisions of his army. He went to the east gate and said: Who is patrolling? Who is patrolling? King Śuddhodana said: I am patrolling. Deva
