Was it to the base of the garden? Is there a special fondness for the garden? Oh, divine one. What is the reason for that? When the young god went to the base of the garden, he saw an old and frail person, crooked like a hunchbacked old woman, leaning on a cane in front. The body trembled, drooling, and the hair was gray. In any case, he looked different from other people. After seeing it, he said to me, "Charioteer, this old and frail person, crooked like a hunchbacked old woman, leaning on a cane in front, walking with a trembling body, and gray hair. In any case, who is this person who is different from other people?" I said to him, "God, this is called aging." He said, "Charioteer, what is this called aging?" I said to him, "God, this person will die soon, so God, this is called aging." He said, "Charioteer, am I also not exempt from the law of aging and the nature of aging?" I said to him, "God, you are also not exempt from the law of aging and the nature of aging." He said, "Charioteer, therefore turn the chariot around and go back to the palace. After returning to the palace like this, think about the fact that I am not exempt from aging." That young god returned to the palace and felt displeased and unhappy because he could not escape aging. Then King Śuddhodana thought, "Will the words of those fortune-tellers and diviners not come true at all? What if the young man shaves his hair and beard, puts on robes, and renounces his home for homelessness solely because of pure faith? I should give the young man a large amount of the five sensual pleasures, and in any case, make him happy and not let him renounce." Then King Śuddhodana gave the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni a large amount of the five sensual pleasures, and in any case, made him happy and not let him renounce. Here it is said: After hearing the words of the charioteer, the young man

The father was worried like that. At that time, in order not to go back to the delightful grove, he gave many enjoyments with the five qualities of desire. Then, due to the nature of Dharma, the Bodhisattva wanted to go to the place of the garden. At that time, (he) said to the charioteer, "Hey, charioteer, quickly prepare a good vehicle for a while, and I will ride it to the place of the garden." After that, the Bodhisattva said to the charioteer, "Hey, charioteer, quickly prepare a good vehicle for a while, and I will ride it to the place of the garden." The charioteer listened to the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni's instructions and prepared a good vehicle. He went to the place where the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni was and, upon arriving, reported to the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni, "Lord, the good vehicle is ready. Please consider that now is the time." After that, the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni got into the good vehicle and came to the place of the garden. The Bodhisattva Shakyamuni saw an old man who was pale, hunched over, thin, weak, with failing senses, and whom many people could not bear to look at. After seeing him, (he) said to the charioteer, "Charioteer, who is this person who is pale, hunched over, thin, weak, with failing senses, and whom many people cannot bear to look at?" "Lord, this is called a person afflicted by old age and disease." "Charioteer, what does it mean to be called afflicted by old age and disease?" "Lord, this person has a situation where he will eventually die. Lord, this is called being afflicted by old age and disease." "Charioteer, am I also not exempt from the law of disease and the nature of disease?" "Lord, you are also not exempt from the law of disease and the nature of disease." "Charioteer, therefore, turn the chariot around. We will go back to the palace. After returning to the palace in this way, I will contemplate the meaning of not being exempt from disease." The charioteer turned the chariot around and headed back to the palace. There, after the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni entered the palace, he thought unhappily, "I am also not exempt from disease." Here it is said: People, bodies are thin, faces are pale, hunched over, without autonomy.

Seeing this sick person, he thought, "I have not escaped from disease." From then on, he was unhappy and felt uncomfortable. Then King Śuddhodana said to the charioteer, "Charioteer, did the young prince come to the garden because he was happy and content? Was he very pleased with the garden?" The charioteer replied, "Yes, Your Majesty." The king asked, "Why is that?" The charioteer replied, "When the young prince came to the garden, he saw an old, decrepit, thin, weak person with failing senses, whom many people could not bear to look at. After seeing him, he commanded me, saying, 'Charioteer, who is this old, decrepit, thin, weak person with failing senses, whom many people cannot bear to look at?' I replied, 'Your Majesty, this person is afflicted with disease.' He asked, 'Charioteer, what is meant by being afflicted with disease?' I replied, 'Your Majesty, this person has the possibility of being killed by this suffering, so he is afflicted with disease.' He asked, 'Charioteer, have I also not escaped from the law of disease and the nature of disease?' I replied, 'Your Majesty, you have also not escaped from the law of disease and the nature of disease.' He then said, 'Charioteer, therefore, turn the chariot around, and we will go back to the palace. Having returned to the palace in this way, I will contemplate the very meaning of not having escaped from disease.' After the prince went back to the palace, thinking that he had also not escaped from disease, he felt unhappy and uncomfortable. Then King Śuddhodana thought to himself, "Will the words of those soothsayers and diviners not come true completely?" And so on, as before. Here it is said: At that time, in order to prevent me from returning to my presence with joy, (the king) also gave me the enjoyment of the five desirable qualities, such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and the most pleasing tactile sensations. According to the norm, when the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni desired to go to the garden, (the king) commanded the charioteer, and so on, as before. The Bodhisattva Shakyamuni made (something) from cloths of various colors.
