Bathe him at all times! Give him food at all times! Attend to him and honor him at all times with true bliss! The mother took him with her joyful hands and massaged his body at all times. She bathed him at all times, gave him food at all times, and attended to him and honored him at all times with true bliss. And then, having applied all those substances whose scent was exceedingly pleasing and adorned him with all ornaments, he was offered to his father, Śuddhodana. King Śuddhodana took him, placed him joyfully on his lap, contemplated him again and again, and generated joy. The nature of things is that the Bodhisattva Śākyamuni is of good form, beautiful, pleasing to behold, having completely transcended the color of humans but not yet having attained the color of gods. When men and women looked at him, they could not be satiated and obtained joy. For example, if gold from the Jambu River were hammered into ornaments by a skilled goldsmith and placed on a white cloth, it would be exceedingly clear, blazing, and radiant. Similarly, the Bodhisattva Śākyamuni is of good form, beautiful, pleasing to behold, having transcended the color of humans but not yet having attained the color of gods. The nature of things is that the Bodhisattva Śākyamuni becomes beloved and pleasing to the heart of a great assembly of beings. And when this great assembly of beings moves him from shoulder to shoulder, it is like an autumn lotus being beloved and pleasing to the heart of a great assembly of beings, so that the great assembly of beings passes it from hand to hand, just as before. The nature of things is that as soon as the Bodhisattva is born, he looks at forms without blinking his eyes. That he does not blink his eyes is like the gods of the Thirty-Three (त्रयस्त्रिंशत्, trayastriṃśat, Thirty-Three). The nature of things is that as soon as the Bodhisattva is born, with the divine eye born from the ripening of previous karma, he sees a yojana all around him day and night. With eyes born of karma, stainless, he sees great forms and likewise the most subtle, one yojana around, day and night, as if they were in front of him. The nature of things is that as soon as the Bodhisattva is born, his voice is melodious and pleasing, his voice is sweet, and his voice is agreeable.

It is like this. For example, the birdsong of the snowy mountains is both pleasant and delightful, the sound is beautiful, and it is pleasing to the mind. Similarly, at the moment of the birth of a Bodhisattva, the speech is both pleasant and delightful, the sound is beautiful, and the speech is pleasing to the mind. On Mount Kun-jin, there lived a hermit named Nirvyakula, who possessed five superknowledges, had a nature of loving-kindness, was full of compassion, and was amiable to all beings. He had a nephew named Mis-byin. At that time, Mis-byin entered a cave to meditate, and the Bodhisattva was born. The whole world was illuminated by a great light, and Mis-byin saw this sight and said to Nirvyakula: "Khenpo, have all the suns appeared at once? This mountain, together with the cave, is illuminated by light." Nirvyakula said to him: "The light of the sun is always hot. But this light, if it touches the limbs, feels cool. This must be the light of the Sage. The luminous Bodhisattva must have been born. After being born, the rays of light of that great being, like gold, with these stainless rays, have illuminated the three realms." Mis-byin said: "Khenpo, please go and see whether he will become a Chakravartin king or attain unsurpassed wisdom." Nirvyakula said: "Now, the house of King Śuddhodana is crowded with kings under the sun, kings of castles, merchants and merchant leaders, captains, Brahmins, and hundreds of thousands of patrons. When it becomes deserted, I will go to King Śuddhodana." After that, King Śuddhodana thought: "Alas! If the hermit Nirvyakula could come to Kapilavastu in person, that would be wonderful." After that, the hermit Nirvyakula appeared in the sky and went to the gate of King Śuddhodana's palace. At that time, the gatekeeper informed King Śuddhodana: "Please let the gods rejoice, the hermit Nirvyakula has arrived." King Śuddhodana

Having heard this, he felt joy, satisfaction, extreme joy, and unparalleled delight. He offered supreme reverence and spoke these words: "Great sage, you have come well! What is the purpose of your coming?" Free from Afflictions said: "Great King, I have come here to see your son, to behold the guide, the lord of the world, the Able One." The King said: "If that is so, then wait a moment until the youth awakens from his sleep." Free from Afflictions said: "Noble steeds sleep only a quarter of the night. The sleep of those who seek purpose does not linger long in their eyes." Then, the youth Shakyamuni, sitting in his mother's lap, was given to the sage Free from Afflictions. The sage Free from Afflictions took him with both hands, examined him for a moment, and said: "How have the diviners prophesied about this divine youth?" King Śuddhodana said: "They say he will become a universal monarch, possessing the seven precious things." Then, the sage Free from Afflictions, having seen the Bodhisattva, spoke in verse: "The landowners, the thinkers, are confused in their minds. In times of strife, a universal monarch will not arise. This treasury of Dharma, through supreme merit, will become a Buddha, having completely triumphed over misdeeds. If he possesses indistinct marks, he will become a lord of men, a powerful ruler, master of the four continents. Since the marks of the Able One are exceedingly clear, this supreme being will become a Buddha, turning the wheel of Dharma." Then, the sage Free from Afflictions began to examine the certainty of his own life's end and the Bodhisattva's manifest enlightenment. He saw that the Bodhisattva, at the age of twenty-nine, would leave his home and practice austerities for six years, after which he would realize the nectar. Seeing that he would die in the interim, he sat with his eyes filled with tears. King Śuddhodana, seeing this, was alarmed and spoke in verse: "Those who are seen by men and women, who never tire of seeing, who bring joy, the virtuous one with the beautiful body, seeing him here, great sage, why do you weep? What terrible thing will happen to my youth?"
