Those who do not see from the aspect of truth and existence, but insist on their respective wrong views, clinging to them and manifestly adhering to them, subsequently naming them, saying, "Only this is true, the others are false," those who dwell with anger towards things like places of unpleasant smells to be known by the nose. Those who are completely defeated by the knot of the assembly of anger of the renunciates and Brahmins, and who possess the universal combination of anger, are also allowed to be manipulated by the Evil One as he wishes. Monks, those renunciates or Brahmins who do not see from the aspect of truth and existence certain smells to be known by the nose, but insist on their respective wrong views, clinging to them and manifestly adhering to them, subsequently naming them, saying, "Only this is true, the others are false," those who dwell in non-discriminating equanimity towards things like places of neither pleasant nor unpleasant tastes to be known by the nose. Those who are completely defeated by the knot of the assembly of renunciates and Brahmins who think "this is true" and cling to it and highly regard it, and who possess the universal combination of pride, are also allowed to be manipulated by the Evil One as he wishes. Monks, it is like this: for example, behind a person, a vengeful enemy like an executioner is following, and that person is very happy, and does not see the fault in it, but when he thinks separately, when he knows, "This is my vengeful enemy like an executioner," then that person is tormented by it, feels ashamed, feels guilty, and is condemned. Monks, likewise, the noble disciple who is learned, having obtained this noble wisdom that transcends the world, the past childish behavior, ignorant behavior, and corrupt wisdom cause him to be tormented, to feel ashamed, to feel guilty, and to be condemned. He thinks to himself: "In the past, I only thought of impermanence as permanent, I only thought of suffering as happiness, I only thought of impurity as pure."

considered pure. I thought of selflessness alone as self. Thus, I thought that I had previously perceived impermanence as permanence, suffering as happiness, impurity as purity, and selflessness as self. Monks, it is like this: for example, a person with eyes takes a very pure mirror and discerns the characteristics of his own face. Those who are of a childish nature, of an ignorant nature, and of a corrupt wisdom think thus: this being that appears in this way is true and exists in a real way. Those who are not of a childish nature, not of an ignorant nature, and of a wise nature think thus: this being that appears in this way is not true and does not exist in a real way; this is merely an image, this is merely something that deceives the eyes. Monks, likewise, a noble disciple who is learned also considers in this way the various smells of the past, future, and present that are to be known by my nose: they are not permanent, not stable, not enduring, not thus, not non-inverted thus, not non-different thus, not truly, not truthfully, not truly so, not as it is, not non-inverted, not non-perverted. Accumulation is also thus, exhaustion is also thus, having no essence is also thus, falsehood is also thus, the nature of deception is also thus, Mara is also thus, the tools of Mara are also thus, a corpse is also thus, the image of a corpse is also thus, so one should not rejoice in them, should not praise them, should not be particularly attached, should not be particularly attached and abide in them. The Blessed One has said that the noble one who has transcended the world is true, and he thus discerns them separately. Having understood this, he considers the past, future, and

Thus, he truly sees smells that have arisen in the past, future, and present as diseases, and truly sees them as boils, sores, sins, impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. When he truly sees smells that have arisen in the past, future, and present as diseases, and sees them as boils, sores, sins, impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, then, regarding smells that have arisen in the past, future, and present, his perverted thoughts, perverted notions, perverted mind, and perverted views, such as the knot of covetousness, the knot of malice, the knot of holding precepts and vows as supreme, and the knot of clinging and holding as supreme, thinking "this is true," he will abandon all of these. Having abandoned these, the demon is frustrated, disheartened, and dwells without direction. The evil demon departs unseen, destroys the demon and the demon's retinue, engages in a great battle, completely triumphs over the battle, and dwells having completely defeated the battlefield itself. Thus, for one who dwells in following the yoga of the noble disciple's higher wisdom, living by wisdom is the most supreme among all ways of living. Monks, how does the noble disciple dwell in following the yoga of higher wisdom, and living by wisdom is the most supreme among all ways of living? Monks, here, the noble disciple dwells in following the yoga of higher wisdom, and he becomes attached to and dwells in pleasant tastes that are to be discerned by the tongue; he dwells with anger towards unpleasant tastes that are to be discerned by the tongue; and he dwells in equanimity without individually analyzing neutral tastes that are to be discerned by the tongue. Thus, I have long been studying and following this.
