Following that, one experiences aging, sickness, and death, and the beginning of the past is unknowable. I should not now train in sounds cognized by the ear as I did before, but I should train to abandon the wrong beliefs, inverted perceptions, inverted minds, and inverted views regarding sounds cognized by the ear in the past, future, and present, namely, the knot of the accumulation of greed, the knot of the accumulation of anger, the knot of the accumulation of upholding moral discipline and asceticism, and the knot of the accumulation of clinging and upholding the belief that "this is true," and I should think separately in order to abandon them. Monks, know that in this place, some sounds cognized by the ear are pleasing, while in other places, they are displeasing. At times, they turn into pleasant places, at times into unpleasant places, and at times into neutral places. Monks, know that in this way, sentient beings have been obscured by the mind, deceived by the mind, and deluded by the mind for a long time, not seeing the faults and not truly knowing liberation, and they are allowed to act as the evil demon desires. Monks, know that some ascetics or Brahmins do not truly see sounds cognized by the ear as true and real, and they firmly grasp and cling to their own wrong beliefs, saying, "This alone is true, and the rest is false." They dwell clinging to pleasant places of sounds cognized by the ear. Those ascetics and Brahmins, afflicted by the knot of the accumulation of greed and associated with clinging, are also allowed to act as the evil demon desires. Monks, know that some ascetics or Brahmins

Those who regard sounds cognizable by the ear as true, but do not see them from the perspective of reality, instead clinging to their own erroneous views, and based on this, assert, "Only this is true, all else is false," they harbor anger towards those unpleasant sounds cognized by the ear. These ascetics and Brahmins, troubled by the knots of affliction born of anger, filled with the habit of anger, are also allowed to be manipulated by the evil one as he pleases. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins who consider sounds cognizable by the ear to be true, but do not see them from the perspective of reality, instead clinging to their own erroneous views, and based on this, assert, "Only this is true, all else is false," they do not make separate observations of those sounds cognized by the ear, remaining in a state of indiscriminate equanimity. These ascetics and Brahmins, clinging to the view that "this is the truth," troubled by the knots of conceit, filled with the habit of conceit, are also allowed to be manipulated by the evil one as he pleases. Monks, it is like a madman, or a drunkard, who engages in sexual intercourse with his mother, and takes pleasure in it, without seeing any fault. But when he sobers up or regains his sanity, he will feel pain, shame, regret, and be condemned for having engaged in sexual intercourse with his mother. Monks, similarly, when a noble disciple obtains this wisdom that transcends the world, he will feel pain, shame, regret, and be condemned for his past foolish actions, ignorant actions, and actions of perverse wisdom. He will think thus: In the past, I thought of impermanent things as permanent, I thought of painful things as pleasurable, I thought of impure

I only thought of myself as pure. I clung to selflessness, only thinking that was me. Therefore, I used to think of impermanence as permanence, of suffering as happiness, of impurity as purity, and of selflessness as self. I thought like that. Monks, it is like this: if an echo arises on the bank of a river or on the bank of a large canal, those beings who are childish in nature, foolish in nature, and whose wisdom is corrupt, think like this: the being from whom this sound arises is real and exists in a real way. Those beings who are not childish in nature, not foolish in nature, and who possess wisdom, think like this: the being from whom this sound arises is not real and does not exist in a real way; only the echo exists, only that which deceives the ear exists. Monks, likewise, a noble disciple who has heard the teachings also discerns with his ear the sounds of the past, future, and present. For these sounds, there is nothing that is permanent, nothing that is stable, nothing that is enduring, nothing that is thus, nothing that is unerringly thus, nothing that is not other thus, nothing that is truly, nothing that is truthfully, nothing that is uniquely, nothing that is as it is, nothing that is unerring, nothing that is not inverted. They are merely empty, they are merely false, they are merely without essence, they are merely deceptive, they are merely the nature of deception, they are merely demons, they are merely the tools of demons, they are merely corpses, they are merely the form of corpses. Therefore, one should not rejoice in them, one should not praise them, one should not be strongly attached to them, one should not be strongly attached to them and abide in them. The Blessed One has said that the noble one who transcends the world is true, and they understand this separately. Therefore, having understood this, they consider the sounds of the past, future, and present that are discerned by the ear to be diseases.
