also truly sees them as pus, sores, arrows, impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. He truly sees all sounds, past, future, and present, that can be perceived by the ear, as sickness, pus, sores, arrows, impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. When he truly sees them, he abandons the reversed faith, reversed perception, reversed mind, and reversed view regarding the sounds, past, future, and present, that can be perceived by the ear, such as the knot of the assembly of greed, the knot of the assembly of malice, the knot of the assembly that holds precepts and asceticism as supreme, and the knot of the assembly that manifestly clings to and holds as supreme, thinking, "This is true." Because he has abandoned these, the demon is frustrated, discouraged, and helpless, and he abides, unseen by the evil demon, and having left, he destroys the demon and the demon's retinue, and having waged a great war, he is completely victorious in the war, and having completely defeated the war itself, he abides. Thus, for this noble disciple who abides in the yoga of higher wisdom, among those who live by wisdom, it is living by the unsurpassed. Monks, how does a noble disciple who abides in the yoga of higher wisdom live by the unsurpassed among those who live by wisdom? Monks, here, a noble disciple who abides in the yoga of higher wisdom, for example, clings to and abides in pleasant smells, etc., that I previously perceived with my nose, and abides with anger towards unpleasant smells, etc., that can be perceived by the nose. He abides in the non-discriminating, non-non-discriminating equanimity towards neutral smells, etc., that can be perceived by the nose. In this way, when I have long followed and practiced this,

Experiencing suffering and death, and since the beginning of the past is unseen, I should not now train in regard to odors that are to be cognized by the nose in the same way as before. I should not have wrong faith, inverted perception, inverted mind, or inverted view in regard to odors that are to be cognized by my nose, whether past, future, or present, such as the knot of the assembly of covetousness, the knot of the assembly of malice, the knot of the assembly of holding morality and asceticism as supreme, and those knots of the assembly that cling and hold as supreme, thinking, "This is true." In order to abandon those, I should train, and I should think separately in this way: "May those be abandoned." Monks, however, here, for some, those very odors that are to be cognized by the nose become pleasing, while for others, those very odors become displeasing. And for those, at times they become like pleasant situations, at times they become like unpleasant situations, and at times they become like neutral situations. Monks, in that way, beings here have long been obscured by the mind, seduced by the mind, and deceived by the mind, not seeing the faults and not fully understanding liberation, and thus are allowed to be controlled by the evil demon as he wishes. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins do not truly and abidingly see these very odors that are to be cognized by the nose, but insistently cling to how each of them wrongly believes, and having manifestly clung to them, they subsequently label them, saying, "This alone is true, and the others are false." Those who cling to and abide in situations that are pleasing to the nose are ascetics and Brahmins who are completely overcome by the knot of the assembly of covetousness and who possess the binding of attachment, and they too are allowed to be controlled by the evil demon as he wishes. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins do not truly see these very odors that are to be cognized by the nose.
