Being in that state, those who are completely troubled by the knots of the assembly of malice of ascetics and Brahmins, and who are endowed with the pervasive action of anger, are also allowed to act as the evil demon desires. Monks, some of those ascetics or Brahmins who do not see these forms, which are to be known by the eye, as true and existing, and who firmly grasp their own wrong ideas, clinging to them, and who subsequently label them, saying, "Only this is true, and the rest is false," those who are in a state of equanimity like the state of forms to be known by the eye, abiding in equanimity without individually examining them, clinging to the idea that "this ascetic or Brahmin is true," and who are completely troubled by the knots of the assembly of supreme attachment, and who are endowed with the pervasive action of pride, are also allowed to act as the evil demon desires. Monks, it is like this: for example, a madman, whose mind is distracted, wanders around naked, and is very happy with those things, and does not see any fault in them, but when he regains his mind, he is tormented, ashamed, remorseful, and condemned by his previous mad behavior, distracted behavior, and naked behavior. Monks, likewise, a noble disciple who has heard and who has attained this noble, transcendent wisdom, is tormented, ashamed, remorseful, and condemned by his previous childish behavior, foolish behavior, and immoral behavior of wisdom. He thinks to himself: "I used to think that only impermanence was permanent, I used to think that only suffering was happiness, I used to think that only impurity was purity, I used to think that only selflessness was self, so I used to perceive impermanence as permanence, perceive suffering as happiness, perceive impurity as purity, and perceive selflessness as self." Monks, this

For example, a magician or a clever disciple of a magician sits at the crossroads of a great road and performs four kinds of illusions, namely, a host of elephants, a host of horses, a host of chariots, and a host of infantry. If he manifests them, then those beings who are childish, foolish, and of perverse wisdom will think thus: 'These hosts of elephants, hosts of horses, hosts of chariots, and hosts of infantry that appear exist in a true and abiding way.' Those beings who are not childish, not foolish, and who possess wisdom will think thus: 'These hosts of elephants, hosts of horses, hosts of chariots, and hosts of infantry that appear do not exist in a true and abiding way; this is merely an illusion that has been created, merely something that deceives the eye.' Monks, likewise, a noble disciple who is learned also discerns with his own eye the forms that have arisen in the past, future, and present. For these forms, there is nothing that is constant, stable, real, unchanging, unerring, non-different, correct, true, unique, as it is, or not inverted. Even if gathered, it is still false; even if piled up, it is still false; without essence, it is still false; false, it is still false; the dharma of deception, it is still false; a demon, it is still false; the tools of a demon, it is still false; a corpse, it is still false; the image of a corpse, it is still false. Therefore, one should not be delighted by it, one should not praise it, one should not be particularly attached to it, one should not be particularly attached and abide in it. The Blessed One has said that the noble one who transcends the world is true; thus, one should individually realize this. Having understood in this way, one regards the forms that are perceived by the eye, which have arisen in the past, future, and present, as a disease.

And also truly sees accordingly, like a boil, like an arrow, like a sin, like impermanence, like suffering, like emptiness, and like selflessness. When he truly sees the forms cognized by the eye, past, future, and present, as a disease, like a boil, like an arrow, like a sin, like impermanence, like suffering, like emptiness, and like selflessness, then regarding the forms cognized by the eye, past, future, and present, he abandons such things as wrong faith, or inverted perception, or inverted mind, or inverted view, such as the knot of the assembly of greed, the knot of the assembly of malice, the knot of the assembly that holds morality and asceticism as supreme, and the knot of the assembly that manifestly clings to and holds as supreme, thinking "this is true." Because of abandoning those, the demon is frustrated, disheartened, and dwells without support, and the evil demon, unseen, departs, destroying the demon and the demon's retinue, engaging in the great battle, and having triumphed over the battle, the very face of the battle is manifestly defeated and he dwells. Thus, for this noble disciple who dwells in the union of engaging in higher wisdom, living by wisdom is the unsurpassed livelihood among those who live by wisdom. Monks, how does a noble disciple dwell in the union of engaging in higher wisdom, living by wisdom as the unsurpassed livelihood among those who live by wisdom? Monks, here, the noble disciple who dwells in the union of engaging in higher wisdom is one who, in the past, is attached to and dwells in sounds cognized by the ear, such as pleasant places, but is filled with anger and dwells in sounds cognized by the ear, such as unpleasant places. Sounds cognized by the ear, such as neutral places, are not individually examined. He dwells in the neutrality of non-individual examination. Thus, I have long studied and
