The Great Net of Illusion Sutra. The Great Net of Illusion Sutra. In Sanskrit: Māyājālaṃ nāma mahāsūtram. In Tibetan: The Great Net of Illusion Sutra. Homage to the Three Jewels! Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika's Park. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, there is training in higher morality, but without higher mind and without higher wisdom. There is training in higher morality and higher mind, but without higher wisdom. If noble hearers abide in diligently applying themselves to higher wisdom, then the cultivation of higher morality and higher mind will be perfected. Monks, thus it is that noble hearers, abiding in following after higher wisdom, are living the supreme life among those who live by wisdom. Monks, how do noble hearers, abiding in following after higher wisdom, live the supreme life among those who live by wisdom? Monks, here, noble hearers abiding in following after higher wisdom, are attached to and abide in forms cognizable by the eye that are like pleasant places of the mind. They are filled with anger and abide in forms cognizable by the eye that are like unpleasant places. They do not discriminate forms cognizable by the eye that are like neutral places. They abide in the non-discriminating neutrality. Thus, having long followed and practiced this, I have experienced aging and death, and the beginning of the past is unseen. Now, I should not train in forms cognizable by the eye as I did before. I should not have wrong views, inverted perceptions, or inverted minds regarding forms cognizable by the eye, whether past, future, or present. I should not...

Perverted views are like this: In order to abandon the knots of the collection of covetousness, the knots of the collection of malice, the knots of the collection of holding precepts and asceticism as supreme, and the knots of the collection of manifesting attachment and regarding as supreme, thinking "this is true," one should learn, and those knots should be abandoned. It is for the sake of individually examining in this way. Monks, however, here, for some, the forms that can be known by the eye become pleasing, while for others, those same forms become displeasing. For those, at times, they become like pleasant places, and at times, they become like unpleasant places, and at times, they become like places of equanimity. Monks, if that is so, then beings have been obscured by the mind for a long time, deceived by the mind, and deluded by the mind, not seeing the faults, and not fully understanding the emergence, and thus they are allowed to be manipulated as the evil demon desires. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins do not see these forms that can be known by the eye from the perspective of truth and existence, but instead insist on their own wrong beliefs, manifest attachment, and then add the label, "This alone is true, and the others are false." Those people are attached to and dwell in the pleasant places that can be known by the eye. Those ascetics and Brahmins, completely afflicted by the knots of the collection of covetousness, and endowed with the universal connection of attachment, are also allowed to be manipulated as the evil demon desires. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins do not see these forms that can be known by the eye from the perspective of truth and existence, but instead insist on their own wrong beliefs, manifest attachment, and then add the label, "This alone is true, and the others are false." Those people are filled with anger towards the unpleasant places that can be known by the eye.
