That merit greatly bestows upon practitioners, causing them to increase more and more excellently. It also benefits both worlds and brings happiness to both worlds. This is another merit of proclaiming the sacred Dharma. There are other merits of proclaiming the sacred Dharma as well. What are these? It is like this: becoming free from laziness. When wise individuals of good nature listen to the proclamation of the Dharma, if they listen with the fault of laziness, then at no time will worldly or transcendental matters be accomplished. All of these are due to the fault of laziness. Having heard of the fault of laziness, one completely abandons it. Initiating diligence, possessing mindfulness, possessing awareness, and for all matters, being free from laziness, one acts swiftly, acts on time, acts without sin, and acts without abandoning, then all matters will be fulfilled. One who benefits both worlds, one who is free from laziness, one who is always cautious, and one who initiates diligence will reach the other shore of all matters. All undertakings will also be rightly grasped. If there are a hundred who have laziness entering their hearts, then having heard the proclamation of the sacred Dharma, those faults of laziness, with mindfulness, will constantly uphold the merits, and greatly hating the faults, will abandon laziness like fire. One will also completely abandon it like a weapon. Furthermore, if some matters are close to decline, that is all due to the fault of laziness. For one without laziness, the meaning of what is heard and all the meanings of what is heard will be accomplished. This is another merit of proclaiming the sacred Dharma. There are other merits of proclaiming the sacred Dharma as well. What are these? It is like this: becoming grateful. Having heard other Dharmas, one becomes grateful, understands reality, and having heard the merits of gratitude, one will constantly become grateful from proclaiming the sacred Dharma. Gratitude, becoming a friend of the grateful.

Everything will become very stable. Those who have not promised to be friends will all become friends. Those who say, "This person has merit," and have given him even a small amount of help will be remembered. Because he possesses the wisdom to know what has been done, he will obtain great merit and become all-knowing. There are other merits to proclaiming the sacred Dharma. What are these? They are like this: always remembering death. Among all recollections, the most excellent is the recollection of death. By overcoming death through contemplation, all beings will become filled with fear. Once filled with fear, they will not do meaningless things. Having seen various forms with the eye, they will not generate attachment. Nor will they engage in various thoughts. Having heard various sounds with the ear, they will not generate attachment. Nor will they engage in various thoughts. Having tasted various flavors with the tongue, they will not generate attachment, nor will they engage in various thoughts. Having touched various tactile sensations with the body, they will not generate attachment, nor will they engage in various thoughts. Having cognized various phenomena with the mind, they will not generate attachment, nor will they engage in various thoughts. In this way, one will completely cut through all the networks of existence. If a person becomes frightened by the fear of death, he will see that all these things have no essence whatsoever. He will see that everything is suffering. He will see that everything is without self. He will see that everything is empty. Because he sees things as they truly are, he has no attachment to anything, and therefore he is not attached to the realms of the gods. Nor will he become attached to the realms of humans. Why would he appear in hell, among the hungry ghosts, and among the animals? This is because he is liberated from attachment to the five realms. Having emerged from everything, he becomes weary of everything because of the suffering caused by the fear of death, transmigration, and birth. One who is free from desire is liberated.
