It is so. One should establish the Dharma and Vinaya. Whether it be a renunciate, a Brahmin, or a householder, they should say, "So-and-so, a son of good family, is well-established in the Dharma and Vinaya." One should act as one speaks. Thus, oneself and others can also be established in the Dharma and Vinaya. The more one establishes it, the more one destroys hundreds of thousands of millions of births in samsara, and hundreds of thousands of millions of eons. Destroy it. Prevent other hundreds of thousands of births from falling into hell and the realm of hungry ghosts. This is also another great merit of listening to, relying on, practicing, and contemplating the sacred Dharma. For those who listen to the Dharma, those who proclaim the sacred Dharma are extremely precious. Because they show the approach to Nirvana, they are in effect Buddhas. For those who, through the power of the Dharma, establish the sacred Dharma proclaimer, one should rely on them as on a lama, with great respect and joy, unwavering. This is the fifth merit of listening to the sacred Dharma. Furthermore, what are the sixth merits of proclaiming the sacred Dharma? They are: having established oneself, one can also establish others, and make others believe. Destroying the countless sufferings of those who have fallen into hell and the realm of hungry ghosts in hundreds of thousands of births, and becoming a vessel. Causing weariness with samsara. Correctly showing happiness. Speaking of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path. From the continuum of both, great merit arises. So it is also in one's own continuum. Because it benefits oneself and others, great merit will arise. The more one listens to the proclamation of the sacred Dharma, the more wisdom will increase. The more it is so, the more afflictions will cease.

Thus, with the exhaustion of these afflictions, one will be completely liberated from suffering. These are the merits of proclaiming the sacred Dharma. Furthermore, the seventh merit of relying on, meditating on, and repeatedly practicing the proclamation of the sacred Dharma is: What is this? For example, one's mind will not be disheartened by decline. Having heard of the ripening of the fruits of karma, one will not be disheartened by decline. One will not do what should not be done. One will not speak what should not be spoken. One will not contemplate thoughts that should not be contemplated. The courage of this person's mind will also not be completely diminished. This is the seventh merit of proclaiming the sacred Dharma. Furthermore, the eighth merit of proclaiming the sacred Dharma is: Again, having seen others surpass oneself in knowledge, hearing, discipline, wisdom, or scriptural authority, one does not become arrogant, but together with them, one analyzes the characteristics of the Dharma. One also clarifies those statements and the meanings of those that become confused. This is the eighth merit of proclaiming the sacred Dharma. It causes unarisen roots of virtue to arise, because having heard the proclamation of the sacred Dharma, one causes unproduced roots of virtue to be produced. Those who proclaim the sacred Dharma are willing to generate roots of virtue in this way: just as when seeds are sown separately in the furrows of a field, the sprouts are able to grow vigorously. Similarly, the roots of virtue of those who are diligent, the listeners of the Dharma go to the proclamation of the Dharma, and from the speaker of the Dharma, the seeds of the roots of virtue enter through the ear canals and grow well in the field of the mind. When the seeds of the Dharma have entered the field of the ear consciousness, at another time, when the fruits have fully matured, they completely protect one from the suffering of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, and from the fear of famine. Therefore, having been completely delivered from those, and having completely destroyed all those sufferings, having cut off all precipices, and having been liberated from all fears.

And thus, one enters the unsurpassed state of peace. Thereafter, one will enter into Nirvana. Preaching the sacred Dharma is for those meanings, it is doing the work of the Buddha. Therefore, the merits of preaching the sacred Dharma are these: those who always go to, respect, and practice the preaching of the sacred Dharma are refuge and the door to surely escape from Samsara. Those who preach the sacred Dharma also have other merits. What are these? They are like this, they cause one to rise higher. The roots of virtue are greatly and completely matured upwards. Whoever has strong diligence in always going to listen to the preaching of the Dharma, the roots of virtue of those people will mature later. For example, if seeds are well sown on the ridges of a field, they will mature later due to the sunlight and the changes of the seasons. Similarly, the roots of virtue are matured later by the sun of wisdom. Therefore, the sacred Dharma should always be preached continuously, and it should also be listened to. There are also other merits to preaching the sacred Dharma. What are these? They are like this: they cause complete maturation and certain liberation. When the roots of virtue are completely matured in the mind, at that time, only through the cause of constantly approaching, holding, discriminating, and practicing this, the mind stream is completely purified, and therefore it destroys the afflictions. When the afflictions are exhausted, one will be completely liberated. Those who are certainly liberated become without attachment, and they think like this: my births are exhausted, the pure conduct has been practiced, the deeds have been done. My other existences are completely unknown. All those qualities come from preaching the sacred Dharma. Therefore, one should constantly listen to the Dharma. There are also other methods, which are the cause of certain liberation.
