Those who are particularly fond of indulgence also have no virtuous Dharma in their minds. In the realm and time of death, all of these will not be of benefit to me, nor will they bring happiness. When winds like ants and needles pierce me intensely in the realm and time of death, what refuge or protection will I have? Bound tightly by the ropes of their respective karmas, they are led from here to another world. Here, neither mother, father, sibling, one's own kin, friend, nor circle of relatives can become a refuge; they are powerless when the realm and time of death arrive. Therefore, one should meditate on mindfulness of death in this way. At that time, one will be particularly fond of generosity, discipline, and wisdom. Those who act well in this way, their virtuous actions will increase significantly. They will be completely separated from non-virtuous actions. Therefore, they will enjoy happiness in the realms of gods and humans, and eventually attain Nirvana. Therefore, having understood these qualities, whether woman or man, householder or renunciate, ascetic or Brahmin, one should always meditate on mindfulness of death. If one is mindful, then a person who is frightened by the fear of the Lord of Death will not do any non-virtuous deeds. Likewise, when meditating in the mind, all sentient beings will die. Whether in the realms of gods, humans, hells, hungry ghosts, or animals, there is no place where one can escape the control of the Lord of Death. When meditating in this way, the mind that is frightened by the fear of the next world will not excessively pursue sounds, touch, tastes, forms, and smells. Nor will it cling to the notions of permanence, constancy, and eternity. It will transform into the notions of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. When one is mindful of death, all faults will not harm him, and he will constantly and continuously think of virtue. Meditating with the mind

will also increase significantly. If one constantly and continuously cultivates and meditates on the recollection of death, and does so repeatedly, then the object of attention will constantly arise for him. Just as in the lower and four directions, whatever has not been destroyed, has not fallen, has not separated, and has not become a dharma of change, does not exist here. Among the hundreds and thousands of beings who rejoice in the mountains, first of all, Mount Meru, the king of all mountains, will also be destroyed and disappear by the fire at the end of the kalpa. Alas! Will my body still exist? The boundless oceans and rivers, which are the masters of all nagas, and also the abode of all nagas and asuras, will surely be completely dried up by seven suns. What need is there to mention my body? In short, the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, all of these three realms are impermanent, unstable, non-eternal, and of the nature of complete change. What need is there to mention that my body and life are impermanent, unstable, non-eternal, and of the nature of change? When he constantly and continuously meditates on these with an extremely calm mind, with a single-pointed and virtuous mind, he will not become attached to anything. With a mind completely devoid of attachment, he will not be bound by any desire or hatred. His desire and hatred are constantly destroyed, and ignorance will also disappear. They are liberated from all faults, and thus attain the supreme state of immortality, non-aging, and non-exhaustion. Therefore, one should focus on these recollections of death. Therefore, among all recollections, the most supreme is the recollection of death. Furthermore, those who practice the recollection of death also have other merits. Whether they are renunciates or brahmins, when they practice the recollection of death, the suffering of the body

Just as it becomes like an empty frame, one should separately discern. If one has come to know the various sufferings, then how will my bodies, the body, be destroyed by diseases, and the Lord of Death approaching will also destroy the mind. The noose of the Lord of Death has completely bound me, what should I do? I am also unable to cultivate generosity, discipline, and wisdom. Therefore, as long as the Lord of Death has not yet arrived, one should cultivate generosity, discipline, and wisdom. The Lord of Death, who destroys the lives of all sentient beings, will come without much delay. Those ascetics and Brahmins who focus solely on remembering death, in comparison, such remembrance will bring fruition and ultimately reach the state of transcending suffering. Furthermore, one can also remember death through other means, namely: this form aggregate is emptiness. This body is empty and impermanent. All these conditioned phenomena are impermanent, painful, empty, and selfless. Because they pass away swiftly in an instant, they are extremely shaken, tending to decay, having the nature of non-existence, cessation, emptiness, without essence, like a rotating bucket, a mirage. Alas, all these conditioned phenomena, as well as this body and life, are like bubbles and bubbles on water, meaningless, like a mirage. In every moment of all states, there arises the great fear that I will die. Therefore, take the essence, good deeds are of three kinds. Likewise, the three kinds of non-virtue should also be completely abandoned. Likewise, one should also remember death. This is precious to ascetics or Brahmins. Remember it by cultivating it in one's own mind. Then, at this time, the Peacock King recited the verses, like this: Who can destroy this world, the six great enemies of terror, old age and disease.
