Nor with those who are liars. Nor with those who have deceptive practices, nor with those who are dishonest. Nor with those who are extremely greedy, nor with those who deceive by cheating in measurements. Nor with merchants who are opposed to worldly people, nor with those who break the banks of rivers to cross. Nor with hermaphrodites, nor should one walk even one step together with a woman on the road. Nor with those who tame elephants. Nor with those who are untamed. Nor with those who tame horses. Nor with those who speak of non-existence. Nor with those who turn their backs on the Three Jewels. Nor with those who are hostile to the Great Vehicle. Nor with those who abide in non-discipline. Nor with those of low birth. In short, a monk should not dwell together with those who have such sinful deeds. Why is that? Because due to the act of dwelling together, the monk will decline, and worldly people will also understand. Just as this is a defiled action, they will also perceive the monk in the same way. Whatever sentient beings associate with, in whatever manner, people will also perceive them to be just like that. Therefore, those who fear ill-repute should not associate even one step with those who have defiled actions. Then, at this time, the Peacock King recited the verses spoken by the Blessed One, as follows: Do not mix with pus, for pus will quickly arise. Therefore, do not mix with pus, it is proper to do what is without pus. Whatever kind of person, if one always makes friends with similar people, whether good or bad, one will be seen as being like them because of associating with them. All those who seek happiness should only follow virtue. By this, one will obtain happiness here, virtue does not cause suffering. By associating with others, one sees the arising of qualities, and likewise, faults arise from association. Here is spoken the brief characteristic of qualities and faults.

Always accompanied by goodness, the monk possesses fame and virtue. Associating with the wicked, one quickly becomes a wicked person. Those who completely abandon evil deeds should always cherish the essence. One should always abide with goodness and abandon that which is untamed. Thus, the Peacock King teaches the Dharma to those gods. Monks who are fearful due to their lack of fame will also perfectly possess seven qualities. Namely: they do not rely on sinful people; they do not become overly delighted in gains and respect; donors and patrons will be very pleased with those who are content and have few desires; they will rely on the midst of mountains; they will become those with good fortune; they will not speak excessively; they will not wander in villages, nor will they enter houses of drinking; they will not engage in buying and selling. In this way, monks who are perfectly endowed with such qualities and who walk well will not be in vain. Many people will also become respectful towards them. Therefore, the pinnacle of the cause of carelessness is this: in this way, monks who are without fame will have no fear. Any monk who is without fame and without fear is even more superior than those among householders. Because from faults, he will act as he pleases, speak as he pleases, be without shame, be without scruples, and will do many things that violate the precepts. After that person's body is destroyed, he will fall into the lower realms and be born in the hells. One who is fearful due to lack of fame will walk alone and will not rely on houses. They will always dwell in mountains and solitary places and will also be content. They will not rely on desire and greed. They will abandon all the faults of the land. They will regard even the slightest fault as fearful. Therefore, whoever in this world is fearful due to lack of fame is a true monk. He is one who possesses good fortune. Furthermore, the Great Vehicle

For the monks who dwell in monasteries, there is a Dharma that is cherished. What is it? It is non-attachment. The Dharma called non-attachment is the most delightful. Monks, those who are non-attached are pure, solitary, endowed with wisdom free from attachment, walk steadfastly alone, have wisdom that is well-established, and those whose lives are pure will ultimately be free from sorrow. They are holders of perfectly peaceful minds. They will not be discouraged by suffering, will not give rise to anger and conflict, will not rejoice in pleasurable things, and will not be afraid of fearful things. They will not be completely deprived of their own benefit by becoming attached to close friends and relatives. They will also not be attached to the laughter, arrogance, play, and enjoyment of city dwellers. They are not of a nature to go about closely. With a mind free from attachment, they will also sleep and awaken comfortably alone from village to village, from city to city, from market to market, and from house to house. Their mind is non-attached and pure. That completely pure conduct will not be stolen by demons, sounds, tactile sensations, tastes, forms, smells, and those things. They will not rejoice in gain and respect. They will destroy the mental activities that have been obtained or otherwise arisen. They will completely abandon them. In order to prevent those unwholesome mental activities from arising, they will strive and exert effort. They will destroy in this way: 'By cultivating these paths, how can those unwholesome mental activities no longer disturb my mind from the outside?' They will strive, struggle, and exert effort in order not to generate that single unwholesome thing that arises from the cause of conceptualization. This is the rough Dharma of non-attachment.
