Conduct. Just as a wild horse is tamed, so should the mind be tamed by the Dharma. Having thus praised the qualities of the supremely profound pure land, the Bodhisattva, wishing to benefit the gods with wisdom, was born there by the power of aspiration and engaged in benefiting others. He taught the Dharma in various ways, and the qualities of the Dharma were also widely proclaimed. Having heard those Dharma and Vinaya teachings, the gods were filled with faith and listened with one-pointed minds, speaking and conversing, teaching these Dharmas without contradiction. What the king of Gaya teaches to us, the Tushita gods, is the Dharma of the lord of Tushita, the peaceful Nirvana, and there is no contradiction or difference between this and that. There is also no individual difference. This Dharma and Vinaya, which has been thoroughly examined in all respects, is virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end, supremely joyful, supremely auspicious, supremely blissful, attaining all happiness, benefiting all gods and humans, and bringing auspiciousness. Then the gods said, "Furthermore, how can all of us beings attain benefit and happiness, and ultimately attain Nirvana? Please, Lord Peacock, explain these twenty-two categories of Dharma." Having heard the words of the gods, that pure land, with a mind of great joy, with a mind of great devotion, with a mind moistened with compassion for all sentient beings, and having engaged in benefiting others, again taught these twenty-two categories of Dharma, which is the supremely profound Great Vehicle, the Dharma that brings about the attainment of great happiness. This is how it is taught. This other Dharma is the supreme liberator, extremely vast, and what makes all beings happy is great compassion. The Dharma called great compassion is pleasing to all beings, and all beings believe in it, and...

Those who are frightened by fear are the foundation of trust; those who have well-controlled minds are Nirvana; those who have no protection are the place of refuge. For those who have compassion, Nirvana is not too far away. Although there is wavering, it is not truly existent, transcending from the mind of anger, and those who are free from anger and harm, those who possess a mind of compassion, are adorned with the great ornament of compassion. Why is it called compassion? It is because it destroys the faults of harmful intent. With the compassion of Dharma, the mind that arises in the five realms should be directed towards sentient beings. Here, let us first, as a Bodhisattva abiding in the Mahayana, cultivate compassion for the beings in hell. How to cultivate? Those sentient beings are driven by their own karma, deceived by hostile minds, and experience unparalleled suffering, such as being nailed, transformed, hammered, poured with molten copper, pounded with pestles, dragged by vultures and crows in countless rivers, entering forests of sword leaves, and experiencing intense, rough, and unparalleled suffering in rivers of transformation and so on. They are tormented, dissected, dismembered, and squeezed in the reviving hells, black line hells, aggregation hells, crying hells, great crying hells, hot hells, extremely hot hells, the surrounding hells of the Avici hell, and hundreds of thousands of the one hundred and thirty-six hells. Deceived by their own karma, bound by the ropes of karma, filled with horizontal fire, seeking protection, searching for refuge, running around everywhere, one should generate this thought: When will these beings find happiness? How will they find refuge? When will I be able to liberate them from the great ocean of extremely fierce suffering? One should have compassion for those beings in this way. Those who have compassion, at the time of death, even the gods will...

They will also become lords of freedom. They will also become Chakravartin kings among humans. For all sentient beings, they will also rejoice in desires, suffering, pleasure, and virtuous dharmas. Therefore, one should focus on the suffering of hell beings and generate compassion. In this way, the Brahma's merit, which is vast and diverse, will also visibly increase. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva who abides in the Mahayana, whether a renunciate, a Brahmin, or someone with similar intelligence, can, with an encouraging mind, wholeheartedly rejoice in benefiting sentient beings, and thus generate compassion for the pretas. One should also generate the mind in this way: These pretas are born in the realm of pretas, their bodies are tormented by various kinds of hunger and thirst, and they possess bodies like burning forests. They appear face to face with each other and run conspicuously. They have bodies that are intensely burning with flames. They seek refuge everywhere, running in all ten directions, but they have no refuge at all. To liberate them from those sufferings, alas, when will these beings be freed from the various sufferings of hunger and thirst? Therefore, one should generate compassion by focusing on the sentient beings born in the world of pretas. Furthermore, that one who is well-established in the Mahayana, by manifesting the mind of enlightenment, also generates compassion upon seeing animals. The pretas have various sufferings and greatly enjoy killing each other with swords. And animals also go to three places, namely, the sky, water, and earth. They devour each other, taking each other's lives in various ways. Alas, when will they be freed from various sufferings?
