Then, by what virtuous qualities should all the great faults be thoroughly destroyed? It is like this, by what is called contentment and having few desires. What is called contentment and having few desires is like this: it is the source of all happiness. The person who possesses this virtue always possesses all the supreme happinesses, and he has no fear of fire, kings, thieves, water, and so on. This person does not speak for the sake of adorning himself with various riches, going from house to house. Those attendant friends are attendant friends of thieves. He also does not live at the door of a house in a lowly place. He also does not speak false words of serving friends. Dancing, revelry, and arrogance are also not done as a means of service. He does not speak meaningless words, nor does he do meaningless things. He is not burned by the fires of desire for wealth. Those who are fond of associating with others will not suffer many sufferings from not being able to breathe. He does not associate with evil friends because of greed for wealth. He is not always full of doubts, and when he goes on the road, he has no fear of thieves. He does not increase the number of non-friends, nor is he judged by all people. He is also not afraid of the fear of punishment. Thus, even a householder will be without various fears. The fears of various faults are completely stopped, and he is completely in a state of peace. If even householders can completely overcome faults, then what need is there to say about those who live in the forest? If this person becomes greedy again, it is like eating vomit. The most excellent offering of monks is like this, what is called contentment and having few desires. Why do monks who are content and have few desires appear so beautiful, pure, and bright? Only having one seat, only having one patched garment, wandering alone, living in the mountains, caves, piles of grass, and cemeteries, being satisfied with only one-third of the stomach's food, and

Wandering through countries only in an unfamiliar way, begging only from relatives, friends, and one's own kind, carrying only a worn-out bowl, completely abandoning perversion with wisdom, completely abandoning any place where offerings can be made, observing the one path well, observing the length of the yoke, not being distracted to other places, abandoning reliance on eating only delicious food, drinking only drinks that do not count many liquids, staying only three or seven days in villages and cities, not holding beds adorned with gold, staffs, and silver, only abandoning observing the paths of past homes, friends, and relatives, only practicing abandoning reliance on the begging, bedding, and the king's gate of the supreme king, only abandoning those who proclaim renunciation based on contentment with lineage, only speaking, being frank, and universally speaking of the same nature as this. The discipline and asceticism of a monk who is like this is the supreme contentment of completely abandoning defilements. Only by having very few desires can one cut the bonds of Mara. Those with great desires are thieves who possess painful discipline, hold the appearance of monks, and are like diseases, sinners who do not please the beings of the assembly of humans, including gods. Monks, a monk who possesses contentment and few desires is a true monk. His senses do not wander everywhere towards sounds, touch, tastes, shapes, smells, and objects. Sleeping outside, mindfulness is closely established on the body, Dharma, feelings, and mind that abide for the benefit of all sentient beings, realizing accordingly, completely and highly gathering the mind, subduing the senses from the collection of samsara, contentment is said to be a monk, as long as one becomes less desirous.

Those people, whether householders or renunciates, will not become negligent. Then, at that time, the Lord of Non-Contention uttered verses. Thus: The fruit of mindfulness is liberation. People fall into hell through negligence. Mindfulness and negligence, this shows their difference. The difference between bondage and liberation is like the moon and darkness. Mindfulness and negligence, this is the only difference. Happiness is seen in small desires, suffering is in great desires. The characteristics of happiness and suffering are said to be understood in this way. The fire of those who always have great desires is the nature of the heart. Where there is no desire for bathing, small desire is a cool ocean. Just as fire cannot be extinguished by firewood, similarly, people with great desires cannot be filled with wealth. Those who have desires will not be happy without day and night. Whoever has great desires is troubled by transverse thorns. Kings are never satisfied with wealth, they die and leave in the hundreds of thousands, and will go to many more places. Therefore, small desire is happiness. Thus, the Lord of Non-Contention, dwelling well in the heart of the lotus, teaches to the auspicious time and the speaking geese. Furthermore, the Lord of Non-Contention, in order to grasp the faults of negligence, in front of the speaking birds and also before the auspicious time, teaches the sutra spoken by the Blessed One Light-Protector, heard from the previous gods, thus, whatever shows defiled dharmas should be destroyed by pure dharmas. Among them, the seven defiled dharmas that should be shown, and the dharmas that should be destroyed by pure dharmas, what are these? For example, being particularly fond of visiting relatives and friends is because of being away from home for a long time. Similarly, if a monk is particularly fond of meeting with relatives and friends, and his own family, his mind tends to this, follows this, indulges in this, and becomes arrogant because of it, during the day
