Connected entirely by the illusory wheel of the earth, I travel through villages, cities, and towns, being born, dying, and transforming from moment to moment. Because I cherish the components of the body, the shell that is like a body of snake venom, I should not wander because of gluttony. I should not be constantly running around for the sake of food, nor should I laugh excessively. A monk who proceeds in this way, by the power of walking, will not transgress in a second way. When one has entered for alms in villages, cities, and towns, one should examine one's own body separately, as it is. Thus, if one meditates well on the body and exerts effort, then for women themselves and for all men, defilements such as desire will not enter the heart. From such situations, one should not transgress even for the sake of one's life force; these are the situations that monks who truly desire benefit should not transgress. Furthermore, a monk should not transgress in a third way. That is, monks should always maintain mindfulness. From mindfulness, a monk will also become endowed with awareness. With a virtuous friend, for a monk with a virtuous mind who is not distracted, the gods will always be near, like a shadow. Even the gods of the retinue of Mara will not be able to harm him in the slightest. How then is mindfulness maintained? With intention as the forerunner, the mind and mental phenomena enter; whether they have arisen or have not arisen, those that have not arisen, with a cautious mind and awareness, again from the object, these mind and mental phenomena themselves will arise, namely, virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. By the distinction of conditions, virtuous dharmas that are beneficial, pleasant, and ultimately lead to nirvana arise for me, and when that declines, other dharmas, mind and mental phenomena, arise from the distinction of conditions.

are unwholesome, unequal, and will cause unhappiness. Therefore, he also fully understands these virtuous dharmas as they truly are. He discerns them separately and well. He remembers them in his mind. Similarly, he distinguishes the unpleasant dharmas part by part. He does not experience the flavors of the five memories. He does not contemplate with his mind. He abandons the present things. What are the five memories? For example, when the eye experiences a pleasing form, due to prior cognition, whether it is near or far, of good or bad color, aged, or experienced long ago, or belonging to oneself, or various forms enjoyed by others, this monk does not experience the taste of them, nor does he contemplate them. He completely abandons the things that come from conditions. Just as someone, fearing the danger of being burned, avoids fire, so too, this monk, fearing the danger of craving, does not remember those past fires of affliction, the joyful desires, the forms that will ultimately lead to much suffering. He does not contemplate them, nor does he let his mind dwell on them. Therefore, he does not contemplate or seek after those various things that have been experienced in the past, enjoyed by himself and others. Furthermore, when experiencing things with companions and close associates, he prevents it, does not rejoice in it, but strives to establish himself on the path. This unchanging monk, not craving desires, not confused, abiding in mindfulness, not associated with all defiled dharmas, well-guarded, the eye consciousness is not led by forms. Furthermore, the second memory is when the ears hear sounds, those intoxicating sounds, such as songs, music, laughter, and play
