Having cultivated the ground, one becomes endowed with excellent qualities and skillfully upholds a single precept. Moreover, one upholds it without deterioration, without interruption, and without leakage. What is the nature of non-deterioration? What is the nature of non-interruption? What is the nature of non-leakage? Non-deterioration means that one upholds it oneself for as long as one lives, and one does not even think of transgressing the vows in one's mind. When others do it, one does not rejoice in it. One also prevents the doing of it. And one establishes all these in the Dharma. This is called non-deterioration. What is non-interruption? It is when one repeatedly abandons the precepts here. If one upholds them, one repeatedly abandons them and then takes them up again. This kind of state is interruption. Therefore, one keeps away from interruption and upholds them. How is non-leakage upholding, and how is leakage? Regarding the precepts, one first receives them from a virtuous friend with a very joyful mind, but then later one becomes regretful and does not uphold them. One is carried away by the waters of conceptual thought. One acts with a defiled mind. One's mind becomes powerless. Then later one is burned by the fire of regret, and having been burned, one completely abandons them. Having completely abandoned them, one does not take them up again. This is called leakage. Therefore, one does not uphold them in that way. Furthermore, the lay practitioner who practices before and after upholds the precepts without deterioration, without interruption, and without leakage. How is it without deterioration? Here, the mind is without defilement, becomes non-deceitful virtue, and does not turn into non-virtue. Like the leaves of a water tree and lightning, with an extremely fierce mind, one turns into a virtuous mind and upholds these vows, and one becomes extremely joyful and respectful. Then later, if one happens to hear from a heretical place, one becomes regretful, turns into a defiled nature, and abandons them. Then later one hears the true Dharma and upholds them. This is called deterioration. Furthermore, interruption

How does one become fallen? This is because lay practitioners, with distracted minds, hold the basis of training. If they worship the gods, how can the Dharma spoken by the Buddha please them? Or can the words of the gods lead me to a good rebirth? Like this, practicing the Dharma with doubt is called falling. Furthermore, what is leakage? Here, those who are empty inside, outwardly show others as if they have a good heart. Even though the inside is rotten, they still hold the basis of training in order to generate trust. This is being empty inside. The lay practitioner who practices the training earlier and later abandons this behavior. So, if it is a lay practitioner who practices in batches, he has taken one basis of training, and after a period of time, he becomes a discriminator, and then takes other bases of training. Like this, earlier and later in sequence, with one mind of that time, from different lamas, like this in batches, holding the training in the earlier and later times. This is called a lay practitioner who practices the training earlier and later. There is also a second type of lay practitioner, called practicing with half-damaged. What is practicing with half-damaged? Here, the basis of training is not held at the same time, but if two are first, after a period of time, three are later. If three are first, later two are held. They also accept. This is called practicing with half-damaged, because what is the reason that causes the basis of training to be half-damaged? They also separately hold the half-damaged. This is called a lay practitioner who practices with half-damaged, this is the second type. What is the third type of lay practitioner who takes vows with regret? Previously, they do not hold the basis of training, but only with meaningful great faith, they generate great faith in the Buddha and so on. If he hears the monks say that the result of discipline will ultimately reach Nirvana, and after hearing this result, he is burned by the fire of regret, with reverence and
