Having settled in one place, the gods addressed the Bhagavan (Blessed One) thus: "Bhagavan, is there any place that possesses the Dharma of permanence, stability, steadfastness, and immutability?" Then, the Bhagavan taught the gods the discourse on the Four Noble Truths. Then, the gods, having heard these words from the Bhagavan, kept them in mind as they were. Then, they returned to their respective heavenly realms. Having returned there, they enjoyed the five kinds of heavenly pleasures, and as long as their desires, pleasures, and accumulations were not exhausted, they rejoiced. Then, they would die from that heavenly realm, and after dying, according to their karma, they would be reborn in the hells, among the pretas, and among the animals. If they shared a common destiny with humans and were born among humans, they would not see the reality of that karma and its causes. They would always see themselves as having very close friends, relatives, and inseparable kin, and as possessing good fortune. Then, the monk, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, would contemplate the state of the gods holding garlands. Through the knowledge gained from hearing, he would see how the state called 'attachment to desire' exists in the heavenly realms. Thinking, 'By what karma will beings be born there?' he would investigate with the knowledge gained from hearing. If someone has listened to the Dharma, then upon separating from the body, they will be reborn in the heavens of the good realms, beyond the place called 'attachment to objects,' among the gods who dwell in the place called 'attachment to desire.' Having been born there, the result of their well-performed deeds will manifest as follows: they will dwell in silver palaces, in vast, immeasurable mansions made of the seven precious substances, with golden platforms, surrounded by celestial birds. For example, there are pleasing birds, birds that emit all kinds of sounds, birds that swim in water, and birds that are like gold. Such birds fill the entire place. In that place, there are also rivers, waterfalls, ponds, and nearby groves. In that direction, there are hundreds of thousands of kinds of birds.

You also are completely filled. There, the gods possess four qualities of desire, and some possess five qualities of desire, and they rejoice because of this. Whatever forms the eyes of the gods see, they see as desirable and pleasing. Whatever sounds the ears hear, they also hear as desirable and pleasing. Whatever smells the nose smells, they all smell as desirable and pleasing. Whatever tastes the tongue tastes, they also taste as desirable and pleasing. Whatever the body touches, they also touch as desirable and pleasing. Whatever the mind thinks of, they also think of as desirable and pleasing, and it is accomplished. Those who are attached to the five qualities of desire dwell in great bliss. The abode of the gods who are attached to desire is unlike others, possessing a divine abode. When experiencing happiness, as long as their desires are pleasing, delightful, extremely joyful, beneficial to this world and the next, and they have performed the actions of discipline, they experience happiness there. Afterwards, they will die from that pleasing and delightful place of desire. After death, just as karma leads them, they will be born in hell, among the pretas, and among the animals. If, due to karma experienced in other lifetimes, they share a connection with humans and are born among humans, then due to the causes and conditions related to that, they will be born in great and extremely prosperous countries. For example, in Kashi and Kosala, they will be seen to be born into the Kshatriya caste like a great Sala tree, or into the Brahmin caste like a great Sala tree. Then, the monk, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, contemplates the world of the gods. He wonders, by what result of well-performed actions will he be born among the gods who are adorned with garlands and whose minds are swayed? He assesses through the wisdom gained from hearing, if he possesses discipline, has mindfulness, a clear mind, is a good field, and has reverence and
