In the world, there appeared a perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, an unsurpassed one, a tamer of men. He taught the Dharma, which is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning and good words, unadulterated, complete, pure, and endowed with all happiness. This peaceful Dharma is as follows: This is form, this form is the origin, this form is the cessation, this form is the path to cessation. Having heard this, the one who was dwelling in the mirror-like garden, seeing the appearance of the fruit of his own actions, said to those protectors of the world: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, has appeared in the world, an Arhat, a perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, an unsurpassed one, a tamer of men. Who is he? Then those protectors of the world said again: This one who has appeared in Jambudvipa is the one who teaches the Dharma to all sentient beings. Then, having heard this from those protectors of the world, that god went to Jambudvipa. That god was frightened by the suffering of death in the world of the gods; in the world of humans, he was frightened by death; in the world of animals, he was frightened by being eaten by each other; in the world of pretas, he was frightened by the suffering of hunger and thirst; in the hell realms, he was frightened by harm. Thus, seeing that there are five fears in each of the five realms, he went to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan was beautiful, radiant, his senses were pacified, his mind was pacified, he was tamed and had attained the supreme peace, he was tamed and had attained the excellent peace, a great man, a great wise one, blazing with glory like a heap of gold, shining like a second sun, stable like Mount Meru, deep like the ocean, like a golden mountain, he was sitting under a tree, and he saw him from afar. The god of gods, seeing such a sight, generated faith, went to where the Bhagavan was, touched the two feet of the Bhagavan, and prostrated.
