residing and experiencing all kinds of happiness. Thus, the king of the gods is Kauśika. Our king is you, therefore, you are the most powerful and possess the greatest magical abilities, so we should wage war against the gods with power, and we should also destroy their city. Thus they say. Thus, the lord of the Asuras, Rāhu, being provoked by the Asuras, utters a loud sound and quickly departs from the city of light. When he utters that sound, the logicians say: This thunder is a sign from the heavens, foretelling a good year, or foretelling a bad year, or it will be favorable to the king, or it will be unfavorable to the king, or there will be war, or there will be no war. They perform sacrifices, doing things for pacification and well-being. Then, the lord of the Asuras, Rāhu, thinks thus: As long as the jewels in the city of light are shining brightly, my palace will also shine brightly; if the light is not bright, then its light will also dim. The light of the gods is also like jewels, namely the full moon and the sun. I shall obscure each of those two orbs. Having done so, the light of the gods will disappear. Thinking thus, if this thought arises during the day, then he, as before, with one hand obscures the solar orb, and with the other hand touches the summit of Mount Meru. Then, the gods, seeing his hand, prepare to fight. Then, because he belongs to the animal realm, his courage is weak, and seeing the bodies of the gods adorned with various precious jewels, bodies of splendor, he becomes fearful and retreats back to the city of light beneath the earth. This is the second cause of the eclipse of the sun and moon by Rāhu, and of thunder. Then again, a monk who knows the ripening of the fruits of karma contemplates the happiness of the great Asura lord Rāhu, and he investigates with the wisdom born of hearing, thus, his city... He serves the lamas with reverence, becomes one who listens to and contemplates the sacred Dharma, and strives to uphold generosity and discipline to the best of his ability. When he goes on the road, he does not take even a blade of grass belonging to others with a thieving mind, and he observes and contemplates frogs and other creatures like the dundubha. Thinking, "I will not kill them," because the most precious and sacred thing for all living beings is life. Keeping this as his sole focus, he makes great efforts to protect living beings. How is it that he has abandoned killing? For the sake of the pleasure of food, if he takes meat or other food that causes its death and changes it, either because of the heat or because of the passage of time, it becomes infested with worms. If those worms are taken out of the food, they will certainly die. Therefore, "I would rather die myself than let these creatures die, and not let the lives of living beings be cut short." He gives up his own life, but he does not take the worms out of the food. Thus, that holy person fears even the slightest fault like dust and strives to seek virtue. How is it that he has abandoned taking what is not given? Thus, that virtuous person, who is dedicated to benefiting all sentient beings, thinking that taking from the possessions of others would become taking what is not given, he does not take even the ashes of cow dung that are prepared for planting in fields, monasteries, or towns. Thus, he abandons even the slightest taking of what is not given and practices discipline that is unmixed, unconfused, without sin, and without fault. By practicing in this way, when he departs from the body, he will be born in a pure place among the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens in the realm of bliss. Having been born there, he will possess immense happiness, his body will surpass the sun, and he will have his own light. He will be better than that god because he will individually and accurately experience the results of his accumulated actions, and thus experience many divine pleasures. He will wear divine garlands and garments, and he will have hundreds of thousands of gods.
