Completely abandoning looking at women, not looking at relatives, especially having no sexual conduct, completely guarding all places, and the fear of birth and death. By cultivating the mind completely with these fourteen ways, it is truly complete cultivation. By purifying very completely with these causes, the messengers of evil destinies will not appear at the time of death, and the doors of evil destinies will not be opened. One will not be foolish regarding the sacred Dharma, and one will not be led around wherever one pleases like a person whose neck is tied with a rope. One will not act like a bad horse that trusts evil people. All of these are the states when the sacred Dharma is obtained: the mind is very tamed and very purified, and being very perfected, one will be led among gods and humans. Later, one will also open the gate of the city of Nirvana. Therefore, it is most important to completely purify these minds, so that one will not be controlled by the messengers of Yama. Furthermore, Indra will teach the Dharma to the gods who are threatened by the fear of evil destinies and are disheartened by not seeing the messengers of Yama. Like this, I will begin with one Dharma and successively explain up to fourteen Dharmas, and then successively explain fifteen things. I will explain to you as I have heard from the Blessed One. What are the fifteen things? They are what should be abandoned and despised by those who have left the household life, taken vows as practitioners, and what should be prevented from others doing. For example, first, one should completely understand the essence of the monastic robe, and one should wear the kind of monastic robe that does not promote indulgence. Why? Because being intoxicated by the indulgence of the monastic robe, one will act like a mute and will discriminate between classes. The indulgent body will focus on flirting. That will not practice virtuous Dharma, but will focus on looking at women. That will indulge in debauchery, therefore, there is any other frivolous mind

Moreover, one will become bloated with clothes. Therefore, one should wear clothes that can keep warm and not fear the cold, and only use them to cover the body. In this way, one will not be dominated by careless behavior, and even at the time of death, one will not feel regret. This is the first thing to be fully understood. Furthermore, the second thing to be fully understood is that a practitioner should be known to abide in contentment. Thinking to oneself: How can I become a monastic with discipline? Then, he follows those patrons and donors, not accepting bedding, medicine for sickness, and things that are in accordance with and similar to them. In this way, obstacles will not arise. This is the second thing to be fully understood. Furthermore, the third thing to be fully understood is that, due to attachment to bedding, one abandons monasteries and gardens, and dwells in villages or cities desiring offerings of food or large amounts of porridge, which are not conducive to possessing qualities. This will bring great obstacles, and one will be closely associated with not practicing virtue and not being content. The excellence of practice lies in this, namely, contentment and mindfulness. Those who are not content, if they rejoice in themselves, will be deceived, and evil people will encounter obstacles, like eating vomit. Arya Sadharma Smṛtyupasthāna Sutra, Chapter Forty-Two. Next, there is a fourth thing to be fully understood. What is it? It is to be well-versed in recitation, and to know that it is sufficient to be fully in accordance with the recitation, without further learning. If I become more proficient, the patrons and donors will hear and think: They will give me medicine for sickness. This will bring obstacles to me, so thinking that it is not suitable for me, such a nature is contentment. Such a bhikṣu is a contented bhikṣu.

Furthermore, the fifth thing to be fully understood is how to abide in having few desires, being content, and being mindful. What is that thing? Here, any bhikkhu, if sent by the Sangha, or for the sake of the sick, or for the sake of property, or sent to the donors or the householders, relies closely on lay families. If he drinks beverages and stays in those donors' houses, then this will make his arising obstacles meaningless, the complete exhaustion of the body meaningless, and the effort will become meaningless. Why is that? Because he desires and indulges in flavors, so he falls into that house, and he goes there repeatedly. Therefore, he does not benefit himself, nor does he benefit the sick, and the work of the Sangha cannot be accomplished. Among the repeated causes, the most excellent is this, namely, entering a house, delighting in food and drink, speaking little, and being immoral. These three dharmas are places to be condemned by worldly and transworldly people. Therefore, those who are content and abide in mindfulness should completely abandon them. Furthermore, the sixth thing to be fully understood is: a bhikkhu having few desires, or a renunciate abiding truthfully in alms gathering, should accept only as much alms as would fill him for one day, and should not accumulate separately for tomorrow. If he becomes attached to this, then his mind will also be obstructed, and he will not feel joy in meditation and desires. Thinking, "May these alms not be exhausted," even being attached to small things like this will become an obstacle. What need is there to mention becoming attached to gains and respect? Whoever is completely attached to things is bound even more by craving. Furthermore, what is the seventh thing to be fully understood? Here, when those who travel in countries and regions that have not been heard of or seen travel, a bhikkhu who has renounced from a great lineage should not speak out of having few desires, such as, "I have renounced from such and such a great lineage," or "My lineage is great."
